By coincidence I had a week of free time on my hands during the first week of this games launch. I put over 100 hours in Arc Raiders before I got bored with that game, and since it was already on sale for 35 bucks, I figured play this too and see if it deserves all the hate its been getting online. My only other experience with extraction shooters was Arc Raiders, and Halo 2 was the last Bungie game I played so I am by no means a Bungie glazer. Here's what I think of Marathon.

First the positive: The gun play. Bungie's been making shooters for as long as I've been alive and does it show. Shooting mans in this game just feels good! Everything is just smooth like butter and I feel my brain squirts that good dopamine when I get a headshot indicator

The Mixed: The art style and lore is certainty a choice. I personally like the Ghost in the Shell vibes, and ascendant AI shattering reality lore, but can understand it turning others off. The music itself has really grown on me and some of the tracks will be going into my daily playlist

The Bad: This game is sweaty. Like really sweaty, and the people who like sweaty games are not people you'll like playing with unless you are also sweaty. That said, this game wasn't really built around solo, and it shows. You can play solo, but you're just not going to progress like you would in squads, and thats a shame.

Conclusion: Its a flawed game, and comes with all the baggage that a Bungie game comes with. But for 35-40 bucks its a fun shooter and if you're like me you'll like the sci-fi setting.

I don't think they're getting the full amount from any platform at all, are they? Do they have their own store like Rockstar does for GTA5? I imagine they're eating a store fee on pretty much every sale at this point.
Ultimately, the shill's math was incredibly flawed.

And regrettably, "okay-but-flawed" is not the "unequivocal home run" Bungie likely needs it to be to save their skin.

Something else I noted that I find very suspicious is the ratio of first week Marathon reviews on Steam compared to reviews of Slay The Spire 2:
At the end of the first week on release Marathon peaked at 88.3K players and already had 13K reviews.
Slay The Spire 2 on the other hand had 513.2K player peak and only had 16K reviews.

According to Steams average, the average review to player ratio is somewhere between 1 review per 30-60 players (I pick a 1-45 review ratio which is 2.22%).
This indicates, roughly, that 15% of the Marathon players had reviewed the game in under a week, which is roughly 7x higher than the average.

This reeks of botted positive reviews, especially with the loads of odd less than 0.5 hour playtime reviews and when you compare these 88% positive Steam reviews to 63% positive user reviews on Metacritic it stands out even more.

Compare this to Slay The Spire 2 in the same time period: the review to player ratio was around 3.12% during the first week, much closer to the average.
Brown hands posted these reviews.
I have no reason to doubt that botting was employed here.
I wouldn't put anything past sony but I think we can easily pin it on Bungo cultist.
Absolutely fucking not, this isn't fans. Do you have any idea how expensive this would be to do?
It's almost certainly some shady PR company. Look at Marathon marketing campaign and all the shit they did, do you think something like this would be beneath them?
Kinda ironic that Bungie left Microsoft in the first place to avoid becoming a studio that only made Halo only to get acquired by their competitor only to become a studio that is probably only going to make Destiny games for now on.
As it turns out, a lot of these developers are functionally useless without professional tard-wranglers.

Surprisingly, Jason Jones seems to have been at Bungie the whole time, even back in the 1990s.

Just for fun though, I decided to compare the credits list of Marathon 1994 to Marathon 2026. Other than Jones, not one person involved with Marathon 1994 (just 7 people if you don't count playtesters, Special Thanks, and other non-entities like the catering company) was involved with Marathon 2026 (numbers quoted are 300 developers).
Bungie probably only had like 10 people total in 1994 tbh

That's a format popularized by AI, however it's not just an AI thing it's so prevalent that people pick up on it and start using it even when they're not passing everything through ChatGPT. And yes, I did that on purpose.
Game descriptions suck, game promos suck.
Indie troons are unironically good at writing game descriptions because they have the balls to stand up to corpospeak.

is bunjie's entire stuff has some kind of problem with color recognition?
why the hell the game looks monochome unless its this color of yellow

i cant think of more annoying color to tie your entire color scheme

I’ve put over 125 hours into this game. This is my honest review.

Let’s start with the cons because that’s what faggots care about.

The menus are awful. Even after 100+ hours, I still get lost in them. It’s menus inside menus, and doing something simple feels like solving a puzzle. At this point, I’m operating purely on muscle memory. If someone asked me how to navigate to a specific option, I’d probably struggle to explain it. The devs said they were aware of it and nothing has changed.

Solo play is a mess. It’s just rats and corner campers waiting for someone else to actually play the game so they can ambush them. The AI and Runner abilities are clearly designed for 3 player teams, and it shows. There are more rats here than in your average EFT lobby. Playing solo isn’t hard it just feels misaligned with how the game is built.

Random teams started off feeling unplayable.

Rook runs are way too fun for what they are. They need to reevaluate how fun and rewarding these are compared to trios and solos.

Matchmaking is where things really start to fall apart. Early on, it felt like matchmaking was based on level, gear, and maybe quest progression. It seemed fair at the time, better players would level faster and move out of your bracket. Right?

Now? That doesn’t feel true at all. Lately, I felt like I was underperforming with my usual team. I was getting low kills, low loot, constantly having to back off and heal. I play aggressively, and every push was getting punished. I thought maybe I needed better gear. That didn’t help and in fact, I did worse. I don't like having to ask people to focus on my tasks when I'm getting carried, So i started playing with random teams.

I lost my high tier kits almost immediately. Mid tier gear was inconsistent and barely made a difference. But the worst kits in the game? That’s when I started wiping teams. I’m talking going from grey gear to all purple in a single raid. In one match, this morning my team of three randoms in grey kits with out comms killed two purple shielded players and forced a legendary player to retreat. This keeps happening. At this point, I’m convinced matchmaking heavily weighs gear alongside skill and it massively overvalues gear. No amount of equipment makes up for player skill, but the Dev team seems to think it does. So it would seem that less skilled players are set up to be farmed by naked sweats.

That completely goes against the point of an extraction shooter. Why collect gear if it actively works against you?

If I breathe in enough pure Copium maybe i can start to rationalize this as its meant to tie into a ranked mode, but that’s still not out. Or maybe it’s meant for the Marathon map… which also won't be out for another two weeks (this game is fucked).

Speaking of Marathon’s Cryo Chamber, there’s reportedly no solo queue, and no rook option. That’s a huge fucking problem. A huge portion of the player base plays solo. So what are they supposed to do rely on random fills to experience the "most innovative and genre defining map" the game has to offer? This game is built around team play, but gives players no real tools to find a team. Most people aren’t going to go outside the game to self advertise LFG. I imagine a lot of players may never even see the Cryo Archives, the map that’s supposed to “redefine the genre.” that we hear will save the game.

For a game that's bleeding people and that was never very popular to begin with, this might be the dumbest decision made so far.

Speaking of the the maps:

Perimeter is the “beginner” map, and honestly, it’s the weakest. Loot is bad unless you bring specific keys and then it’s suddenly great. The flow between POIs feels disjointed, with large empty spaces that have no loot, AI, or players. Movement across the map feels awkward, and if you linger anywhere too long, every team eventually converges on you one after the other. Spawns and extracts being tied to POIs only makes it worse, you are forced into these shitty pvp arenas. The map feels overcrowded in all the wrong ways. I ended up adopting a “kill at least one team immediately” mindset just to survive. I don’t enjoy this map, something always feels off. The Hauler POI is fucking great though, that place is fun to fight in.

Dire Marsh is probably my favorite. It’s the largest map, built around medium to long range combat. There’s some CQC, but it’s not the focus. The dynamic weather system can provide fog and heavy rain that can completely change engagements. Sometimes it protects you, sometimes it fucks you. Thermal scopes add another layer of unpredictability. Thermals have been nerfed, but they are still extremely strong. The map has a strong sense of tension. Loot is better than Perimeter, but not by a huge margin. Most faction quests send you here, often requiring multiple steps or specific items that only one player can grab. That can get frustrating fast, especially when you’re repeating the same POIs over and over where most teams will be heading. The spawns are inconsistent, you might start right next to another team, or just within audio range. The biggest issue is that it’s very easy to get caught in the open with no escape. It goes both ways, but it can feel cheap and undeserved. Still, the POIs connect well, and the map has a solid overall flow. There are some dead spots that players might try to navigate through to avoid pvp only to end up pvping another team who had a similar idea, seen it dozens of times now.

Outpost is the smallest map with the fewest players, but the best loot. Early fights lean toward mid to long range, but the real action is the CQC around key areas like the “pinwheel.” It often turns into chaotic multi team fights. Love it. The outskirts are usually filled with rook players who will swarm you the moment you leave high value areas. Third partying is a constant worry. This map is the most exciting, but also the most rushed. I’ve rarely had time to fully explore it most of the raid is spent fighting multiple teams or watching out for rooks.

Anyways:

Weapon balance feels off. Some guns I’ve tried a handful of times and then dropped entirely, like the BRRT. Others feel great against AI but fall apart in PvP, like the Overrun.

It also feels like every weapon class has one clear standout that completely outclasses the rest. On top of that, a lot of weapons are just too inaccessible. I’m 125 hours in and still haven’t used everything, I couldn’t even tell you how the shotguns feel. I’ve only ever gotten my hands on the WSTR. These weapons need to be far more accessible.
While I’m enjoying the story, I don’t like how much of it is locked behind rare loot spawns. Constantly digging through random junk just to find the next clue gets old fast. There is way too much of it. It needs to be dialed back.

I’m also not a fan of the cash shop. I don’t care about whatever they’re trying to sell me that day it just feels like immersion breaking noise.

The pros:

The PvP is where the game really shines. Once you unlock heat reduction upgrades and pair them with the right Runner shell, it starts to feel like “Escape from Quake 3 Arena.” Flying around, bunny hopping with a shotgun, diving into a team and wiping them in seconds. it’s chaotic in a way I haven't felt in a long time..

The feedback in PvP is immediate. Good decisions under pressure are rewarded, and split second calls can decide fights. It's very satisfying when you win.

I also like how much freedom you have to shape your playstyle through gear, shells, and upgrades. That said, replacing lost equipment is too difficult and more options need to be available through traders. There really should just be more options in total.

The UI does a great job supporting team play. Spotting enemies, marking locations, and tracking teammates through the HUD make the game so accessible. The visual clarity makes callouts simple and effective like “blue building, second floor” or “green rectangle, right side” are easy to understand in the moment.

And while a lot of the environment can look like a run down water park, there are moments where the game is genuinely beautiful.

To their credit, Bungie has been responsive to feedback. We’re getting duos soon, and balance changes, bug fixes, and tuning updates are happening regularly.

Finally, the raids themselves have dynamic elements that keep things fresh. It never feels like you're just there to check a box or open a locked room. There’s almost always some kind of event or opportunity that pulls you in and gives you a reason to engage with other players.

I've enjoyed exploring this game and hearing the story it has to tell.

I enjoyed this shit while it lasted.

ftr i think comparing marathon to slay the spire 2 doesnt make sense since its an apples to oranges comparison. one is a card game and the other is an extraction shooter. makes more sense to compare it to other similar games

It's not about making sense. "Marathon is getting mogged by fucking Hearts of Iron 4 and Euro Truck Simulator 2" is funnier than "Marathon is getting mogged by Delta Force". Both are true, but not equally funny.

I'd agree if people were comparing their gameplay, but people are comparing their sales and active users. If a grocery store sells 10 apples and 20 oranges, it actually makes perfect sense to say "oranges are more popular with the customers than apples are."
