I think Malfoid works if its movie Malfoy and not book Malfoy.
The latter is far nastier than a bully while the former just comes off as kind of a dick trying to come off as "cool and edgy" but caves in when he has to actually get his hands dirty.
Malfoy's refusal to kill dumbledore in the book is kind of a twist while in the movie it is part of the tragedy (given how the books are almost always from Harry's POV).
All that is to say that you can give the "yanderer" romance far easier to the movie version than the book one.
