Well, I haven't done much sewing for a while, but I've got a white-tie-and-tails gala function in a couple of months, and I thought it would be more fun to clone a 20s beaded tabard and go in a sort of costume, rather than try to track down an appropriate dress and still end up looking like the country cousin who can't afford real clothes.

If I do progress pictures, would that be of interest?

Please do! I sewed quite a bit a few years back. I made a couple dresses for my senior internship. When I was broke and starting out at work again I'd buy men's tuxedo shirts from the thrift store and sew darts in them and otherwise get them to fit better. Man, I wish I still had that kind of time to dedicate to that.

So... I went to Target this morning...
Ha, isn't everybody going crazy over this stuff right now? Did you have any trouble getting things?
In general that brand doesn't appeal to me but I do like the giraffe bottle opener.

So this lolita print is coming out tomorrow
tumblr_nmvk8bbQ7K1st1jvko1_500.jpg

It's HIGHLY anticipated and I'm afraid it will be hard to get. It comes in 4 colors and 3 cuts. I only like one of the cuts, but I'd take any color that's not black.
I really, really hope I get it. I've never bought from AP Japan during a release like this before.

Aside from lolita I desperately need new normie clothes.. I've been eyeing some stuff at F21 but I can't decide. My wardrobe right now is strega ish and it would be cheaper to just keep going that route and add some new things. I find it very easy to wear and make outfits. But, I love colors and get tired of wearing black all the time. I always wanted to wear more gal/liz lisa type clothes and there's a lot of stuff like that in stores now. so I'm not sure what to do :/

@meltychocolate I showed up at 7:45 (15 mins before target opened) and was first in line. No issues getting what I needed. Could have used the lace tank in a med but I don't think the chest would have been big enough anyway. I had a plan of what I wanted before I went in (namely the urchin dress) and got out easy. My Target is a little bit out of the way. I made out like a bandit when the Missoni collection dropped. Literally NO ONE was buying that day but I think it was also a weekday that it launched. I was up all night working on a project and picked up something to eat from McD's before Target opened. I was that nut throwing stuff into my cart, completely flabbergasted there was no one else there.

High-end Missoni, ironically enough, self-destructs too damn easy. I have a wool scarf that I have to sew back together. The weave at the end is coming undone.

I knew Mr. Multiples was looking for a specific kind of bottle opener. Every time we're out we look at bottle openers and he's always wanted one of the long ones like bartenders have but never really found a satisfactory one. He wasn't too sure at first (both of us have a hard time accepting gifts not tied to an occasion) but once he took it out of the packaging he was in love. It has a nice heft to it and the fact that it's a giraffe automatically makes it the best.

I may not be a teenager anymore, but I want to get a new pair of Vans slip-ons. They are great house shoes. The ones I currently have are almost a decade old and are falling apart.

I like this one's design. It's black and iridescent.

As someone with super sensitive skin, I have been trying to find a good brand for foundation.

Makeup brands I generally like are Jordana, Lancome, Maybelline, and Clinique. I still need to try MAC though.

As for clothes, I usually wear loose shirts and jeans. Favorite stores are American Eagle and most department stores.

@Ancani , I was thinking about your sewing project and started wondering if you'd seen the design series "Shape Shape" by Natsuno Hiraiwa, and "Drape Drape" by Hisako Sato? They're not exactly everyone's cup of tea, but if I'm correct in assuming you're someone who likes to jump right into projects and figure them out as you go without a lot of fussing, they're great resources! Here's a Drape Drape pattern roundup if you, like me, find it helpful to see completed garments made and worn by actual people of various sizes and skill levels.

Tomoko Nakamichi's "Pattern Magic" is another super reference, but I have to be careful with that one, lest my wardrobe start veering into "space emperor" territory. (This is a series of drafting books, whereas "Shape Shape" and "Drape Drape" have patterns ready to sew.)

None of these are very hard to find pirated, but mostly just the Japanese editions. For the English editions, I'd recommend interlibrary loan.

Thanks for the info! I'll be sure to check them out. We have a good library near my workplace...

I think I have mutant hair.

It's freakishly resistant to dye. Even salon-grade permanent dyes wash out in two weeks. Only one dye has ever managed not to, and I've tried tons of them.

And yesterday I found out that it's resistant to bleach, too. My hair survived two rounds of bleach and STILL wasn't light enough to dye purple. It's just sort of a muted deep burgundy, which is nice, but not really what I was hoping for.

So yeah. Mutant hair.

I'm going to be a bridemaid at my friend's wedding. To fit her theme, I've already obtained a coral-colored dress and nude-colored shoes. Now I'm looking at some hand-made rose quartz jewelery on Etsy. Because rose quartz is a semi-precious gemstone symbolizing love, and I love me some handmade jewelry made with real semiprecious stones. It sure beats the mass-produced plasticky stuff.

I recently bought myself some liquid face makeup by Neutrogena from Ulta last night. I have it on now, but I am unsure if I am happy with it. People have told me it blends with my skin, but I feel as if I look like a ginger Melody Hensley (the triggered girl from Twitter).

Since I don't wear makeup/foundation, I unfortunately cannot give you any solid recommendations for sensitive skin. But perhaps you could spot test certain ingredients that you may be allergic/sensitive to. That way you can learn which ingredients work for you, and which to avoid.

I try to find any makeup that either has natural ingredients, is supposed to be good with general skincare, or has pretty good reviews. I apologize if this seems semi-vague.

If possible, try to obtain samples of the foundation to test so don't spend too much money on the full-sized thing that you may or may not end up using. Some inexpensive natural makeup from brands I like are 100% Pure, Pacifica, and recently, Shea Moisture.

I have two questions -
Do any of you girls have advice for (1) keeping on nail polish longer? Do I add a top layer of regular clear lacquer after multiple layers of color or is there a special kind I should get?
and (2) Do any of you know how to help somebody break a nail-biting habit? It's another reason why I can never keep polish on... :c

(1) Unfortunately I have personally yet to come up with a solution to make nail polish last for more than a week, let alone without any chipping. Applying base coat before the polish, and top coat over the polish does help the manicure last longer, though.

(2) I used to bite my nails as a kid. I just kind of grew out of the habit. I've heard a trick to deter from biting nails is applying something spicy or bitter on your nails to deter your mouth from touching them. However, this can only work if you don't like spicy or bitter food.

Mine is like that, but with curls. I gave up doing pretty curls years ago because regardless of how much hair spray I used. It would just go back to being straight within hour. Luckily it goes reacts well to bleach :D

Hello fellow nail-biter! There are a couple things you can try, most of which you've probably heard.

One is to coat your nails in something really unpleasant. Most drugstores/chemists sell anti-nail-biting stuff that goes on like clear polish but has an awful taste (no smell, at least in my experience). I can confirm that they do indeed taste awful. You can also try something like hardcore hot pepper extract or lemon juice, but of course if you bite your nails then you probably also have little cuts on your fingers and that just isn't fun to combine.

You can also pay to have a manicure. (Just polish, not acrylics!) Knowing you paid money to have your nails done might make you want to stop yourself ruining them.

None of that worked for me because I am a bad combination of really stubborn and not terribly clever, so I would still bite no matter how horrid or expensive it was.

What ultimately works, or nearly works, is using nail polish in very bright colours. The taste of polish doesn't bother me, but knowing I may end up with green or purple or neon yellow stuff stuck to my teeth makes me self-conscious enough to remind myself not to bite.

I still bit my nails, but not like I used to. Now it tends to go in phases: I'll spend anywhere from a year to three years mostly being good and not biting, and then I'll start biting again (usually out of stress) for six months or a year before arbitrarily stopping again for a while.

Because, well, I'm not too bright.
