Anyway, since Gamergate was mentioned, I will say that Gamergate could not have possibly succeeded any more than it did. It wanted ethics in video games journalism and an end to feminism in video games. The first goal it achieved as well as it possibly could, since the old access media games journalism outlets were killed by Gamergate. The problem with that is the independents who took over were not any more "ethical" in their journalism, since positive coverage of new video games will always be more profitable in general, partly due to developer favors like sponsorships, early access, and free review copies (and the threat of these being removed due to unfavorable coverage), and partly due to the fact that positive videos simply get more views and make more money than negative videos (although there is of course a market for negative content). The second goal could never have succeeded because gamers were trying to fight against the favored ideology of the elite through making videos about Anita Sarkeesian.
