I could be wrong, but i think the main issue is that people in that field probably won't find work if they aren't top of their class and have strong connections, since most of the more manual labor has been shipped overseas to Taiwan, South Korea etc.
If most positions for a certain field are about coming up with new techonologies or designing shit, it's probably good to stay away from that shit because it's a one-way ticket to be in a world of debt and unemployed. For positions like yours companies will have 1 job opening and the rest of the work is done overseas - not that programmers are not getting fucked by companies hiring jeets to do the coding, but even in such a saturated field people can still find job more easily, i guess.
