Pending his laptop he may not have an ethernet port on it. My 14" ultrabook doesn't - but I have a USB-C thinger that has more USB/HDMI/card reader/ethernet etc etc.

I think it boils down to a few things:

1. Publicly accessible space with a roof and large overhang usually open 24/7 or close to it, 'nuff said.
2. The larger ones are often easier to blend into vs. other areas. There's often a lot of nooks and crannies that can be occupied somewhat inconspicuously. There are supermarkets near me that actually have cafes in them and they frequently fill up with bums taking a load off and enjoying the free climate control.
3. Accessible restrooms that are often in one of the low visibility corners of the building that one would be loitering in anyway.
4. It's easy to steal shit as @World Famous Quasi Payer pointed out, both from customers and the store itself.
5. I've noticed that these stores are staffed sparsely compared to before coronavirus. They keep the absolute minimum number of employees to run a single checkout lane (two if it's REALLY busy), keep the place stocked and clean the floors. These poor souls are often stretched too thin to do anything about vagrants until one of them becomes an active issue.
6. For the parking lots, it's easier for someone living out of their car to stay a couple of days without being noticed due to size, activity and the aforementioned staffing issues.
7. Cheap booze.
8. Junkies congregate where their friends are. If one is tolerated, more will come.
