I hope Josh stops conflating ecological groups with environmental groups. The difference isn't obvious, but it is important. One side researches how organisms interact with each other and the (non-living) world around them, while the other side advocates for policy changes. Environmental groups are, in my experience, generally misinformed and ignorant of actual ecological research says, and many ecologist (particularly in forest management) despise the work that environmental groups do i.e. anti-logging, anti-hunting, anti-fire policies.

Roosevelt was a step in the right direction, but I don't think the world of conservation really found its philosophical footing until Aldo Leopold's "The Land Ethic." Highly recommend reading it if you haven't already.
