Lucas was absolutely always a sped, that much is clear from all accounts of his childhood and such, he just wasn't the kind of sped that was actually disabled on the level that would get a parent any kind of payment for it. He didn't go fully off the rails until the tail end of high school when he started doing as much weed as he could get his hands on, dropping lsd and that kicked off the slow decline that ended with his losing his shit and ending up in the psych ward in 2000

The fact she goes out of her way to try to head off any accusations of fishing for sympathy speaks for itself.
