Atticus, the main character, commits multiple war crimes, including being part of a kill squad that guns down begging nurses and tortures women and civilians to death, but again, that's White Imperialism's fault and actually, he's as innocent as a baby because black people don't make their own choices or something.

He was just following orders. Not like he was a nazi or anything.

Probly not going to happen, but I would honestly love to see Armond White give this show the treatment it deserves. Seems like it would be exactly up his alley.

I don't know if you're joking, but Atticus literally says 'I was just following orders', and it seems to be an excuse that most fans accept because he's the real victim (he's experienced the trauma of racism, you see) and not the civilian women he guns down as they beg for their lives, and certainly not their families or loved ones. I'd point out that this (the war crime) is also an invention of the TV show, in the book he's simply a returning Korea vet.

Incidentally, he's kind of shitty at war crimes too. He's looking for information, but he shoots two of the women before he even starts asking for it, so there was a good chance that he killed the person who could have given him in the information he needs. It's only luck (he shoots the wrong two women first) that stops him from executing them all, including Ji-ah.

I know I'm not supposed to explain the joke, but you do know that pic is from the Nuremberg trials?

He's calling out the niggers' bullshit and mental gymnastics. If the nigger dindu noffing cuz following orders y'all, then the Nazis weren't so bad, it was all that fucking faggot Hitler's fault!

Yeah, I figured it was. I guess my point was that, 'just following orders' was spoken out loud, directly, and Lovecraft Country expects us to celebrate and applaud the main character for it, as well as coddling him because of his ~trauma~. uwu.

I can't help but wonder if they will (or have) reference The Dunwich Horror with the message being, "Rural white people be inbred racists."
This implies they give a shit about Lovecraft's mythos and want to take more than just a couple ideas from him to "reclaim" his work. They didn't even make proper shoggoths, those guys are in name only. :(

I'm still not over the idea of reclaiming a (mostly) public domain author's work. Hardcore nerds (avid book readers, CoC tabletop players) to softcore nerds (just enjoy big monsters, occassionally engage with cthlulhu media, think cthulhu is cool and don't know anyone else) have Lovecraft mostly embeded into their heads already, and as long as Lovecraft is in the public domain people will ball hard on doing what they want with it and using it for game, comic, and book settings (like fairy tales). Its a nigh impossible battle to conquer without making a MCU tier property based on it, and that requires artistic skills and planning the writers didn't have.

I honestly hope there's a second season: with it diverging from the source material, I need to see what their unregulated writing is like. I just think the idea of dark historical "we wuz kings" fantasy would be nucking futs and worth seeing for the crazy alone.

Lastly, Lovecraftian horror with non whites can work: I remember a decent book by a black author with a black protagonist that gives good characterization to the main character while using the mythos properly (without going into lovecraft reeee territory even though I would kinda understand). As said earlier, The Color Out of Space has a black protagonist and it does decent as well. I'm still kinda surprised the original author was white, if I was an executive I'd pick a black author for double ass coverage ("yes double the black people will protect me from being called racist"). I'd lift up a black or at least non-white author too if I was a black showrunner. It's wild seeing tones of white guilt turn into tones of black supremacy.

I hope this show is booming with black twitter, maybe we'll see Yakub become a central theme in next season.

I can imagine the story of a black dude from say Uganda, Nigeria or whatever being lost in the jungle and encountering a huge pyramid with odd geometry and looks nothing like he ever saw before in his life, then as he ventures deeper in he discovers shit that dates back to the Hyborian age and after he barley manages to escape he goes insane from revelation or something.

Reading this thread makes me think that the show could still be good in the second season if they do a complete 180. I would love it if turns out that Nyarlothotep was behind everything. He’s using black supremacist’s hate and evil to mold them into a “superior species”.* Kangz were the real eldritch monsters all along! Black twitter would shit themselves.

*Superior species in the mythos create interplanetary slave empires which are crueler and more oppressive than any human empire in history. That’s when they’re not just committing planetary genocide and harvesting what’s left. You could interpret Shoggoths as all having PTSD from millions of years of being enslaved by the Elder Things. I can’t remember which one but in one story it says that humans may one day become as the Great Old Ones, which is still very much a bad future because of how awful the GOO are.

I'd fucking watch if they did (I'd feel bad for black people not a part of the movement though).

Love this concept. There's more you can do with cosmic and Lovecraftian horror than just racism and otherness, its about the unknown and how man is a speck of dust in a jar.

Holy shit, I'd fund this. It'd be mythos related AND fit with the show. I think it's too far gone in all honesty but damn... gj farmers.

Uh... no. They'd probably paint Nyarlathotep as Black Jesus leading the niggers to the promise land cuz he dindu nothin' and he's pure and wholesome and all Lovecraft is white juice propaganda. We're going jogging in the Dreamlands, DAS RIIIIIITE! UwU

You forget these people are not even writing actual Lovecraft adaptations, these people have no idea how anything is supposed to work. The Disney Star Wars follow actual Star Wars more than this garbage follows H.P.L. Think about that.

Seriously, where did any of you get the idea they would suddenly write something that isn't horrible?

For a show about the horrors of racism, the show is amazingly racist in lots of ways.
There was also a Native American hermaphrodite who got shanked by the gay dad in an early episode. Pretty surprised twitter trannies didn't lose their shit over that.

I just want to see more reconnections to the Hyborian age. Lovecraft and Hoaward were penpals and subtly referenced each other in their works; Conan I believe even confronted what was implied to be an Eldritch being in The Queen of the Black Coast, and Phoenix on the Sword. Conan being the Ur-Chad that he is didn't come out insane because he is that awesome.
So havepeople discovering remnants of the Hyborian age, but they get killed and covered up by a Secret Kabal trying hard to keep a status quo on normalacy a la SCP or something.

I didn't, don't worry, unless they fired a writer or two and replaced em. Or one had a brain tumor with the benign effect of making you less shit at something (somehow). I was trying to express my love for the concept more and the fact that there is a good idea in all of this horseshit.... but its buried under terrible ones.

To be fair, if they painted him as black Jesus I'd pirate the show because it sounds hilarious. All I can think of is the tv equivilent of this meme and it makes me laugh.

Imagine if Bob Howard was submitting his Conan stories to publishers today.

I never meant to imply that they would actually do that. It’s just a way one could actually salvage the story. If a good fanfiction writer wanted to take a swing at it I’d definitely read it.

Not to mention, the Korean Commies are portrayed extremely sympathetically -- they're just "different" is all. American imperialism is solely to blame, while the Commie characters totally dindu nuffin and are being brutally persecuted for having "different beliefs."
