The reason every single adaptation of Lovecraft has to give him the middle finger either overtly in the text or in interviews with the creators ect is because theres a fear that Lovecrafts work could provide the same kind of sense of community and social glue to reactionary elements who should be destroyed.
I'm reminded of some anthology books I have that are compilations of stories inspired by Lovecraft. The editor for all these books wrote an extensive introduction where she said his works should not be discarded because of his problematic views. However she also his views should not be brushed aside. While they try having their cake and eat it with these intros, these books were published in the mid 2010s and I won't be surprised if Lovecraft will be on the cancel culture block at some point.

You can certainly do Lovecraftian horror with a Southern Gothic motif.

New Orleans is tailored made for Lovecraft...

But, my guess is that Lovecraft Country won't even touch the sense of nihilism and hopelessness...
1/3 of Call of Cthulhu literally takes place in a swamp outside Nawlins

Latest episode contained bare bottoms, gory skin suits and down low gay buttsex. HPL would have been proud. Oh, nearly forgot the stiletto-heel sodomy scene. I am enjoying the ride: last week was Indiana Jones, this week is... pornhub?

Don't lefties hate lovecraft?

It probably was said here before, but there is a clear effort from sjws to "colonise" Lovecraft, after they understood he is too well known to cancel.
So you have a lot of works devoted to arguing that Lovecraft's stories are about feeling excluded and helplessness in the world which are AKTUALI what minorities experience all the time. So Lovecraft was really about black people.

Of course it's fucking bullshit and cherry picks aspects of Lovecraft's works to get at the necessary conclusion.

The problem with Lovecraft for them is he's simultaneously popular and well-known to the general media but also represents everything they hate politically and socially, but you're exactly right, he's too well known to cancel. They can't just call him a buzzword online and expect everyone to drop him like they can for anyone else. Instead they've got to change everything about his work and devote anything new regarding him to pushing their agenda. Can't cut the tree but they can poison the roots, basically. They've latched on hard to virtue signalling Lovecraft-related stuff the past five years or so and I think it's only gonna get worse, since the old tactic of "If you don't like it you're just a bigot" is still going strong and it's being used right here, right now to shoot down criticism of this stupid fucking Lovecraft-but-not-actually-Lovecraft sci-fi afro show. They could have Lovecraft himself show up then get beaten down with golf clubs by the main cast and spat on and called a racist by them before they brain him to death, but it'd still be fine and a good tribute to the genre because why would you not like it? What are you, a Nazi?

Funny he mentions Derleth. Derleth seems especially hated by lefty Lovecraft fans and it's usually because he was Christian. The same people who'll go on and on about Lovecraft being problematic invariably bash Derleth for not being "true" Lovecraft and not peddling out ultra-cynical nihilism in his stories and for being a religious guy, because they both hate Lovecraft but hate anything that isn't Lovecraft. It's confusing.

I thought it was about a giant monster with an octopus for a head prank calling people from an alternate dimension and driving them insane?

No, wait that was a cartoon. And then there were two Metallica songs based on his themes ("Thing that Should Not Be" and "Call of Ktulu").

In any case, you could say it is influenced by niggers (at least how H.P. percieved them), what bugs faggots like Jordy is that it's not the way he wants people to see niggers, so it's bad.

It's even funnier to point out that Derleth was one of the few people Lovecraft liked enough to call friend despite their different outlooks. That alone makes his material "more Lovecraft" than this dumpster fire.

Gave the show as many chances as I could, really tried to make it to at least episode 9 since HBO always makes that their seasonal standout episode but jesus fucking christ, every episode has to make sure to have at least two hate crimes.

Episode 8's Emmett Till virtue signalling really, really misses the mark when you've got an actress on the show who fully supports her brother's proven fraudulent lynching.

They managed to slime Emmett Till into there too?? Every week people are brutalized by blacks in horrific ways, yet the media ignores and keeps trotting out Emmett Till like its at all relevant.

Now, to me, it seems funny that many people don’t get the joke about the endless repetitions of the 65-year-old Emmett Till Story in the New York Times (ET has been mentioned six times so far in October in the NYT). But to a lot of people, the infinite redundancy isn’t funny, it’s sacred. Would the Good People have wasted all that time recounting over and over and over an increasingly ancient and irrelevant story if it weren’t of crucial importance to helping us understand America in 2020. Of course not.

They make so only black people, no white people can use magic. Because in the end, its not how you act, but the color of your skin that's most important.

What the fuck? How does that shit even work from a genetic standpoint? What happens if you're half Black half another race? Does it stop after you hit 1/16th black or further? Where the fuck do other minorities factor in? Are East Asaind and light skinned Arabs not PoC anymore? God someone post Yakub or other conspiracy level shit memes

I thought a big reason HP was so disregarded in his own time was because he didnt set it in the south. His big departure from other gothic authors at the time was that he didnt write stuff about how awful the south was, but instead set it in a place more familiar to urban audiences, like college towns and new england, etc.

Its crazy that people forget that from 1860-1930 the only stories in the US were about how evil the south was, the beloved classics from the US were more like the F&F of its day, either non-political or breaking from the hackery
Lovecraft was writing around the time the North started developing a keen interest in Appalachia, “othering” it with theories of racial degeneration, myths about Elizabethan English, lots of stuff that made it out to be like this mysterious otherworld with sinister vibes (instead of just a chunk of Old Stock pioneers living in a particularly underdeveloped area). That eventually lead to a bunch of hicksploitation movies later in the 20th Century.

Deep South got a similar treatment, but I don’t know as much about the history with it.

Kkk in New England. No.
Seen a few other comments like this. Not exactly.

The KKK went through three major incarnations. First one, the Reconstruction Klan, was a Southern nationalist organization that, along with similar groups like Redshirts in Louisiana and others, waged an insurgency and terror campaign against the Blacks and Republicans in the South. They were violently suppressed by the Feds but made enough of a mess that they ended up getting what they wanted. Part of a broader Redeemer movement.

The second Klan, of the Progressive Era, were basically American nationalists, proto-fascist. Rooted in the South, but it spread and ended up becoming based primarily in the Midwest, with huge branches in pretty much every state and major city. It was virulently Protestant and anti-everything-not-White, along with strong anti-Communism. Had mass appeal and was a national problem, not a sectional one. Mirrored the rise of fascism in other countries. Fell apart during the New Deal.

The third Klan was a reaction of the South to desegregation, and was sectional in nature, but still had leftovers from the second Klan in other sections. It was killed by the Feds and no real successor has ever emerged.

I don’t know when Lovecraft Country is set, but if it’s the second Klan era (when Lovecraft lived) it’s entirely possible. Rural New England is not that progressive and Yankees have always had a strong streak of righteous hypocrisy (preach tolerance to the rest of the Union, but freak out when Blacks move into their neighborhood).

Even better, episode 9 was a time traveling LARPing of Tulsa riot with bonus homophobic hate crime. Not only was Omar targeted for being black but also because he was gay and had his gay childhood black boyfriend shot in the head in front of him during his speech about how he had to break up with him because being black was hard enough and he couldn't be both black and gay.

The 10th episode ends in the main character literally becoming black Jesus when he sacrifices himself to be crucified to stop all whites from being able to use magic as Jussie Smollett's sister angrily stares into the camera saying "all whites are blocked from magic, it's ours now!".

This show is honestly, no hyperbole, the worst and most fascinating show I've watched in at least a decade. Every episode repeatedly tries to out victimize the characters from the previous episode. It's probably going to get cancelled due to low ratings like Watchmen but if it actually got a second season I'd be half tempted to watch it because holy shit they're incapable of stopping their insane victimhood mongering while simultaneously being incapable of telling a good story (for example the main actress' character dies in the last episode only to be brought back, literally, two scenes later).

Season 2 would probably have even crazier shit like making Jussie Smollett's sister's baby somehow being white and turn out to be original sin incarnate, where all the blacks would sit around holding hands while staring straight into the camera and saying how they can't kill it "because that's what the whites would do and we have to be better than them!".
