I remember when that story broke out around 2008-2009 about the guy being arrested for owning lolicon comics. The part they left out was that he was being investigated for possession of CSEM and that the comics were being used to compound evidence. He wouldn’t have had enough to have a solid conviction, but those comics were just enough for the prosecution to go “yeah, he’s guilty, throw the book at him”.

Lolicon is the safest way for someone who is attracted to children to get material of their paraphilia. It's still illegal in many places, but it's easy to find and no one would bother prosecuting if it's just cartoon images of children that don't exist, so it's the only way to get that kind of material without getting into real trouble. Following this logic, all pedophiles that want to engage in those thoughts without doing things that are risky would choose to consume lolicon.

Even if it's true that not all lolicons are attracted to real children, all people who are attracted to children would be interested in lolicon because that's what's available to them.

I have never actually seen someone who believes that liking anime gives them "cultured" or "esoteric" taste. Usually those who like anime tend to fall into either the nigger group ("Yo dis shi is lowkey kinda epic bruh") or the degenerate group.

Personally I just like animation as a craft and don't have a particular preference for what country it is from. The main draw I at least have to anime is the fact that japanese animated shows geared for an adult audience don't immediately barrage the viewer with sex and/or violence in the same way western adult animation does, has a lot more technical competency present and also tends to be a lot more varied in genre as opposed to the 5 million variations of family guy that make up western adult animation. It might be a generic example, but Samurai Champloo is a good example, there are very little western animated productions for television of similar quality in both writing and directing. That it's from japan has absolutely nothing to do with any of my reasoning. If zimbabwe made shows of the same quality, I'd watch their stuff. It's just that generally animation as an art is almost entirely dead outside japan.

Not really. Comic book movies were the thing for a while and all the big media figures pretended to like superheroes and it had a negligible effect on comic book purchases, you cannot reasonably say that comics are not still niche. This might also be because most modern western comics are garbage to begin with, but it's audience is as niche if not more niche than it was in the 90s. Manga is doing a little better, but it's mainly the big shonen franchises doing most of the selling in the west. And unlike western comics, manga has a lot more variety in it's subject matter and every single major manga story is not linked with one another like western comics are. The lack of unity in anime and manga means that it's kind of hard to make it truly a fad. You can't really say that Planetes and Ping Pong: The Animation are linked by anything other than them being animations from japan.
