They technically did own Crash & Spyro at one point, they lost them in court. And before that they used Crash, even if they didn't own him like the other characters.
The PlayStation 1 was heavily backed by Universal, which Sony entered into a partnership with to get funding. At some point the deal went sour, mostly because Universal was a film company that didn’t understand game development and would harass Sony devs - particularly Naughty Dog and Insomniac. Eventually Sony got fed up and split ways, but Universal got to take the kids in the divorce.
There are some pretty nasty stories about Universal. CTR was literally made under the conditions that Sony had to be the one to oversee the project just so Naughty Dog can get the fuck away from Universal. The studio believed games could be developed in a month, consistently running strict as hell deadlines. It really starts to explain the large quality drop-off post PS1.
They never pick a mascot, they just have a rotation of popular icons each era. During the PS3, Kratos was the obvious big hitter mascot, while Sackboy and Nathan Drake played secondaries. That's Sony in a nutshell. They've done it almost every gen now. They have a franchise that sells well, they have no idea what to do with the next gen and it dies. Before Sackboy there was a period of around the mid-late 2000s when the monkeys from Ape escape were Sony's mascot for the PlayStation.
They have tried numerous times to push Ratchet into being the Sony mascot, from the movie to his PS5 push as the guy who brings together multiple dimensions of Sony IP. I just don’t think the story driven nature of the series lends itself well to the never-ending mascot role, as they clearly want to have a series end.
PS2 had the Ape Escape Monkey, Ratchet, Jak and Kratos to mess around with, along with Toro for the Japanese. There really wasn’t a heavily clear mascot(s) for this era unlike the others though.
He’ll probably stick around. PlayStation has rapidly standardized their IP with The Last of Us, God of War, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted and Astro Bot being their big (non-Marvel) ten-poles since the PS4. They really don’t want to fall into the same cluster-fuck of brand identity they had with the PS3.That Astro-bot character they've been using seems to be the PlayStation's current mascot, though I wouldn't be surprised when the ps6 comes out, they'll ditch it for something else.
