I think you're being a little naïve about that, honestly. Sugar may have said that they're just gems that happen to look female, but she has also acknowledged that the show is shot through with feminist and LGBTBBQ themes, and said:

Plus, if I understand correctly, gems aren't the only things that fuse in the show. Isn't there some ridiculous fusion of a little boy and a little girl into a bizarre creature looks like a monstrous tranny?

Edit: And, wait, I'm not up on the show's mythology, but isn't Steven's mother supposed to be a gem? How can a genderless gem that just happens to look female be a little boy's mother, exactly?
 
I learned in biology that sometimes people are born with an extra finger. This doesn't change the definition of a NORMAL hand to "4-6 fingers". No, there's five fingers that should be on each hand, and the polydactyl kids are freaks.

Same with intersex folks.

There's a reason why the stereotype is that theater and homosexuality go together like peas and carrots, and it's not because of the Heterotopic whatever nonsense she's talking about. Practically everyone who has ever produced, acted in or even seen a play is gay.

"Queer topics are still taboo in cultural products for young people despite increasing representation of LGBTQ+ stories in popular culture and the recent legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States. This book explores ways in which theatre artists and creators could represent queer topics to young people without facing controversy. Using Kathryn Bond Stockton’s theory of the queer child, this book establishes that all children are queer and that this queerness should be reflected within their cultural products. Stockton’s theory joins those of theatre scholar Matthew Reason who claims that theatre for young audiences (by adults) is impossible. This impossibility leads to the conclusion that theatre for young audiences cannot reflect the queer child without facing resistance from heteronormative thought within schools defined by Foucault's heterotopic relational space. Barrel of Monkey's ensemble in Chicago, IL circumnavigates this rejection by allowing the queer child to create their own stories, paving the way for other mediums to truly reflect the queer child, by positioning the child as both creator and spectators."

No fucking shit. Sex in general is taboo in cultural products for young people. There's hardly any legitimate romance in things aimed at kids under 12.
