And half your neighbors secretly being secret police informants.
Which one lasted longer than one century though? Not exactly very badass to fail so quickly.
But the ussr wasn't real socialism but it totally was but it wasn't.
It was always quasi-mainstream in certain circles like academia. When did idolizing the Soviet Union become a quasi-mainstream thing? Back in the ancient days of ~2014 the furthest left I could think of was Northern Europe, I had no idea more than like two people genuinely thought soviet russia was in any way a halcyon until like last year. Just what the fuck is with that? Was it already like that in 2014?
Why is the nigga in the manhole like 10 feet tall.View attachment 1616990
Bors back at his bullshit again. Make a thread for this fucker already.
You're right. I remember many people from atheists to the left praised both Western and Northern Europe as morally superior and better educated because their citizens were reportedly more happy, more likely to support labor, environmental science and secular politics, etc. Basically the opposite of Republican and Christian politics/beliefs in the U.S. which the media loved to rant against in the mainstream media like CNN, MSNBC and the Daily Show. When did idolizing the Soviet Union become a quasi-mainstream thing? I'm pretty tired from a night of vidya, but I'm pretty sure mainstream progressive talk was about general government intervention against corporations, safety nets, etc., and Stalin apologists or others advocating for genuine communism were about as rare as actual neo-Nazis. Now you pretty much have to disavow the concept of legal tender and private ownership if you want to fit into any left-wing community. I mean it makes sense, overton window managed to shift like that for everything else.It was always quasi-mainstream in certain circles like academia.
Part of it is good old Marxist/Cultural Marxist oppression dynamics - though the French Revolution was the same in this regard, and they seem to fully ignore that one despite its many parallels. There's also the whole "right side of history" thing which gives them a free pass, similarly how almost no one seems to care about the OG concentration camps from the Second Boer War. And the infatuation with "cultural revolutionaries" and the commie revolutionary LARPing etc etc etc.
TL;DR it isn't new.
If we're talking about mainstream politics in the Nordic model of welfare capitalism, sure. Those however follow a social democratic model instead of socialism, if you care about these distinctions. Lighter shade of pink, if you will.I'm pretty tired from a night of vidya, but I'm pretty sure mainstream progressive talk was about general government intervention against corporations, safety nets, etc., and Stalin apologists or others advocating for genuine communism were about as rare as actual neo-Nazis. Stalinism is real communism when it comes to overthrowing the Tsar beating the Nazis (which the Soviets did single-handedly and definitely weren't getting tons of supplies from the US and Great Britain that helped them turn the tide), but not real communism when it comes to the gulags, purges, and engineered famines. At least tankies are honest enough for good old fashioned war crime and genocide denial instead of this Schrodinger's communist bullshit. But the ussr wasn't real socialism but it totally was but it wasn't.
Schrodinger's socialism, the urss is and isn't an example of real socialism depending if it is propaganda or if it's damage control for the millions of death and starving.

The influence of higher education in this really can't be emphasized enough. Yeah, communism and Stalin weren't mainstream for normal people 15 years ago, but it was mainstream for college professors, and has been to one degree or another since the 60's. Universities were some of the earliest and most successfully subverted institutions of the Cold War. The cumulative effect of communist professors' teachings, which they've gotten bolder and bolder about weaving into their curriculum as time has gone on, over a few generations, combined with economic crises and political instability that have caused people to lose faith in the current system, have come together and reached critical mass.If we're talking about mainstream politics in the Nordic model of welfare capitalism, sure. We shouldn't ignore the usual suspects, though: Foucault, Derrida, Sartre, and the infamous Frankfurt School. And most of the current "revolutionaries" were educated in institutions practically worshipping these people and their ideals.
I had one teacher who went to school in the New York around the 70s or 80s. She said that Mao's red book was super popular on campus and almost everyone in humanities was a communist who took lenin and mao as dogma even when all of them were rich kids. Its been a thing for a long time. Same thing happened in my country, elites were subverted and eventually Chavez happens. When did idolizing the Soviet Union become a quasi-mainstream thing?
