A good AR or AK can do that too. Youtube is awash with videos of guys doing mag dump after mag dump on legal lowers.

I'd say and hope that there's not enough casualties for him to pass Breivik but I'm sure with so many people critically injured, he'll end up passing that Korean shooting that had 57 deaths. It seemed to jump up from 2, to 20, to 50 in a very short space of time today.

I doubt it. Bump firing means you're slamming your whole gun forward and backwards. You will fire a lot upwards and downwards, many shots going into the ground and many going above your target.

Considering that CBS claims the suspect had a criminal record, it's more likely he either illegally modified a gun to fire automatically or he illegally bought a fully auto gun.

No one goes and gets a bumpfire stock for a mass shooting. Bumpfiring manually without a special stock to do will wear your hands out in seconds.

Bumpfire stocks aren't even widely known, and 99% of mass shooters aren't shooting enthusiasts. They most likely don't even know about bumpfire stocks. Even if he did have a bumpfire stock, I really, really doubt he ever practiced with it enough to get THIS proficient with it. Again, most mass shooters aren't gun enthusiasts and don't even train with their guns.
 
I think...I found the weapon he was using. I was on a chat talking with some folks about this, and one person wasnt too familiar with types of firearms, so i went looking for a video.

I'm wondering what would drive the shooter to do so something of this magnitude. He's outscored both the Pulse and Aurora shootings (the first by one casualty) and has injured somewhere in the region of at least 200 more.

There's no clear religious or political motive. Some people just snap though, so that may be the case.

Question for those familiar with guns: how easy is it for something like an LMG to just "disappear" out of the army's inventory and into somewhere like the black market or private auctions?

Zero chance, every single legal private auction would only sell legally registered machine guns, of which there are only thousands. In 1986 Reagan banned all new registration of machine guns so there are only so many legally registered machine guns in USA circulation for private sale.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a military base losing a machine gun sometime and it ending up on the black market. It's more likely a dipshit alphabet soup agency let it get stolen, if we're talking about a machine gun ending up on the black market. Remember Operation Fast and Furious? Also:

Just heard about this. Vegas of all places? Upsetting.
My prayers go out to all the families of those shot and injured. No man should have to see death from a bullet outside of the military.
 
As far as access to a full auto goes, it is Nevada. Maybe he had cartel contacts.
