Personally, I think following the image-board style -chan is key. This is an (I)nternet board, heavily influenced by image board culture. Many here are refugees from 4, 8, 9 and other chans. I don't believe an overly sexy, goth or lolita design is necessary - but we can follow in the same tradition without alienating anyone.
The problem with these designs is that they're going to be made by guys following the IB-style -chan meme which involves taking an abstract concept and making it sexy, but unlike those sites we have a large female userbase and those kinds of designs are never going to resonate because we know what a "kiwi chan" looks like. A lot of them are from .farm and they are almost all 4chan /fa/ /cgl/ transplants after the trannymods banned lolcow discussion on 4chan.
A ton of them are vicious Asian girls, they like shit like j-fashion and lolita, despise flash fashion trends, emphasize well-excuted "coords" that aren't "ita", and obsess over obscure brands that have meme reputations. What they don't care about is looking like a skimpy whore.
Like if you just go to an AI and say "yeah make me a gothic e-girl in skimpy clothes and uhhh lime green for kiwis based?" you'll get a "kiwi-chan" but people won't feel like it's a representation of the site because in their mind they know what the site is: dudes yelling at each other for being fags and women in oddly well-coordinated and highly conservative clothes drinking tea while doing over/unders on how long it's been since amberlynn's poop bun last got washed.
People tell me that I'm schizophrenic for thinking Null has a girlfriend and isn't a perma-single-virgin, but you can't tell me that these posts don't sound like a woman wrote them. I agree with what he's saying on Kiwi-chan not being a generic goonerslop whore, but 33-year-old straight men just don't keep up with fashion trends like this.
