Personally, I think following the image-board style -chan is key. This is an (I)nternet board, heavily influenced by image board culture. Many here are refugees from 4, 8, 9 and other chans. I don't believe an overly sexy, goth or lolita design is necessary - but we can follow in the same tradition without alienating anyone.

The reason why hotpocalypse's (who is a woman) Kiwi-chan design is my favorite is because it's very simple, it's not overloaded with refrences, and it's not sexualized.
If you try to make the design to appeal people who most likely wouldn't even like anime or "-chans" you're going to get a design that not many people like. A lot of women also like cute anime shit. It's not the 2000s/2010s anymore. That being said, the Dark Academia aesthetic could work pretty well.

Dark Academia: Librarians, book-store lesbians, cats, women with horned-rimmed glasses, and HR ladies. They think they are quiet and intellectual, but are actually loud and fat.
