Killer 7 is one of those games you either play multiple times to understand what is going on, or you read a 3 hour long essay on gamefaqs explaining what does it all mean
Its great

But I'd always been under the impression that everyone hated the ps2 version

The PS2 version is the inferior version since the load times are so godawful that you can write an entire essay waiting for one screen to load

I'll admit, I knew nothing of RE4's history with the GameCube, and I saw the PS2 had more content, so that's the one I went with when I first bought the game.

I like the PS2 version but it's also still the only version of the game I own (surprisingly enough, given how often the game was rereleased). I am thinking of replacing it with an HD port on Switch or PC.

How's the port? Any NISA flubs?

Still Suda's best work, arguably because of Shinji Mikami lording over him (I do have a huge softspot for Shadows of the Damned, but once again Mikami is involved).

NMH has it charm and memorable character designs, but rewatching the cutscenes for the first time in a decade a few months back, it feels like it was written by aliens and it's really trying hard to be edgy only to get worse in the sequel. Even SotD has these moments and the dialog in Travis Strikes Again reveal trailer was questionable. Liked it a lot more when I was younger.

Edit tangent: Masafumi Takada and his guitarist buddy Jun was the best thing Grasshopper had and Suda squandered them for Akira Yamaoka who hasn't done anything of interest since joining other than SotD.

I love me some Grasshopper and all things Suda51, but he never did it better than he did it here.

Cannot fucking wait to sink my teeth into this port.

The Steam reviews (the only reviews I trust anymore) are extremely positive. Apparently it's a stellar port.

I don't read Japanese so I have no way of knowing, but I wonder just how much of the success of a Suda-penned script has to do with the quality of the localization. Killer is Dead has great VO work but the script reminded me of watching a foreign TV show with fan-made subtitles. You understand what's going on, but the lines are sometimes so strange you wonder about the accuracy.

I will admit to being underwhelmed by his output since he joined Grasshopper, but I wouldn't say he hasn't done anything of interest. The original music he's done for Killer is Dead and Let It Die is really good stuff. There's just not enough of it. I do like the big collaboration soundtracks he's managed to pull together, but it's not like getting a Yamaoka original...

On that note, what the hell has Takada produced of note since going independent? Isn't the entire idea of going freelance so you can work on a variety of projects? I know he's heavily involved in Danganronpa, but I have no interest in visual novels and honestly no idea what that series is about anyway. What else has he been doing?

And is Fukuda still with Grasshopper or did he leave too? For a while I wasn't even sure he actually existed. I couldn't find much about him online.

Fun fact: In the localized versions of Killer7, the voice acting is the same as the Japanese version, but reversed and filtered.

The original Japanese audio? Extremely heavy Engrish.

You can sometimes make out the intended English in both the JP and the localized versions, still.

I don't have a screenshot handy, but one other little detail: When you enter an area, the name is given in English and Japanese at the top and bottom screen, which is probably the most subtle way of delivering a theme (Japanese and American ideals are often fundamentally opposed and incompatible) I've ever seen in a game.

IIRC Takada worked on some songs for the new Smash Bros, but the Danganronpa series is the big recent thing; If you like Killer7's soundtrack you'd probably like Danganronpa's, since they have a similar sound in a lot of places.

Now that Danganronpa is, tenatively, complete and not going to get more entries, who knows what he'll get up to.

Man, I loved this game but never beat it. No time like the present I suppose.

Also I unironically enjoyed P.N. 03. Pretty janky to play, but once you understood the controls and how it was meant to flow, you could pull off what looked like several consecutive miracles while dodging and weaving through a room of enemy fire completely unscathed.

I remember reading about it in EGM when cel shading was all the rage but never played it because I didn't have a GameCube because of course I didn't.

Yeah, P.N. 03 is a fun, arcadey game with delightful eye candy. Nothing more, nothing less, but it's unfairly maligned.

It is a weird game, though. Looking at the game design (specifically, the levels which are obviously build from the same large, repeating modules, rearranged and recolored), it almost feels like it could have been a modern day "Roguelite" downloadable title, with procedurally generated stages. But of course it was a full console release. With that in mind, I'm not surprised it tanked... but still, it's a lot of fun for what it is.

I wish Capcom would make something similar or at least give it a PC port. It feels like the kind of hidden gem you would discover in a Steam sale.

By delightful eye candy I assume you must be talking about the disco fu moveset, because every single level (they're near identical but you know what I mean) is some of the ugliest looking shit I've ever seen in a game in my life.

Tried multiple times to sit down and play K7 on gamecube but I never get very far. Difficult to pinpoint exactly what the deal breaker is. The general GHM oddness minus some more interesting gameplay I guess? Love the personality switching/unique abilities stuff and the soundtrack too but if pressed I'd take another slog through Killer is Dead again than go back to Killer 7.

Regarding the translation, apparently the devs stomped their feet and told NISA to take the goddamn original script and not touch it, because I haven't seen one change at all.

Suda51 considers killer7 to be his masterpiece, so that would explain it

It's definitely something you play and stick with because it's stylish, weird, unique, and interesting, and not because the gameplay is exhilarating.

Speaking of, I can't even imagine how this plays without a controller. All the challenge of aiming must disappear with mouse controls...
