Levine, Neil Cuckmann and CDPR rolled into one, has decided to gift us plebs with another game. Not much yet but I thought this thread might serve as a place to comment on his other work and his legacy in general.

I like Bioshock 1 (though it has lost its awe after many replays), love Bioshock 2, and hate Bioshock Infinite. When Infinite came out, it was touted in the same way Last of Us Part 2 was. "Finally a game that was art." The Citizen Kane of game. Maybe it fucked with Levine's brain because he struggled and blew lots of other peoples money trying to make a successor to it.

But who talks about Infinite now? It's story to me, not mentioning the poorly handled politics, is nothing more than the huffing of farts. Booker is an unlikeable, I presume intentionally, lead (think Joel in the LOUP2), and Elizabeth not much better. Its narrative falls apart under the slightest scrutiny. Multi-universes seems quaint nowadays, but I think it works to its narrative detriment in spite of that. Booker's story loses all real depth when it becomes one of a vast multitude. It loses its grandeur and turns into a nihilistic, literary paradox. Others may disagree, but that's my opinion.

Bioshock 2 may have simpler story of collectivism vs individualism, but its characters are stronger (could Levine make a character with as much nuance as Sinclair?), its story meatier in its simplicity, and its discussions about the self and genetics profounder than a muh America is white supremacist.

Obligatory.

Game looks like they took Bioshock and coated it with 2020s paint. Everything that isn't memberberries surrounding Bioshock looks generic, as though it was cut from the ever-so-small template of how media in the 2020s should be. You couldn't even get 30 seconds in without this gay shit:

Boy, I am not looking forward to hearing about this faggot shit for months on end.

Saw the reveal trailer when the game awards was going on, and as soon as I saw "From the creator of Bioshock", I groaned. I liked the first two games, but I was never big into Infinite. From the stories of development hell going on in the studio, I'm not hopeful for Judas. Levine seems like another of the creator-types who needs to be reined in to get something good, otherwise things go off the rails, maybe due to ego.
I rolled my eyes when the trailer spent 5 seconds lingering on the giant inter-racial couple billboard, if only for reminding me of the pointless moral choice Infinite starts off with. I've got about zero hope there's going to be anything of substance when it comes to the plot for Judas, but the gameplay might be serviceable.

So is Judas supposed to be the good guy in this game, or is it just a name drop of an infamous biblical figure?

Bioshock will forever be the dumbed down System Shock 2 to me.

Half of the mechanics of Bioshock are cargo cult from SS2. And gameplay-wise, the only things that are borderline new are the spider splicers and the "Big Daddy" bossfights. And let's not forget the camera mechanics, the only innovation they got, a heresy of the utmost degree.

Bioshock 2 was different developers (the guys who did XCOM: The Bureau and got nuked afterwards) and it's essentially the first game with better art direction, better level design, better enemy design and more fun gameplay. Interesting the only Bioshock without Levine was the only one with care about not playing like shit and focus on being, well, a game.

Infinite is .... out of the line. The gameplay is beyond shitty, the plot collapses on itself at warp speed (it needed retcons in its DLCs when Levine realized he made the POC revolutionary into a bloodthirsty hypocrite and the Rapture parts manage to cripple even more the shaky internal coherence of mutant-slug-libertarian-paradise). It's beyond me how people manage to like it.

It's a mistery how Bioshock got successful at all, truth be told. Maybe because it was the first Shock-like to be on consoles?

Fuck it, I'm opposed to this game from that shitty pretentious faux-60's art style alone. It sucked in Deathloop and its going to suck here.

I'm not opposed to it in theory. Despite it's many flaws I thought We Happy Few did it okay. But this looks like shit.

Why would you expect anything but pure political propaganda from these fucks? The only Bioshock game with political nuance is 2, and that wasn't made by this white-hating rat faced cohort of jews. It was at it's worst in Infinite, as American Krogan has detailed in exhaustive and autistic detail.

If anyone hasn't seen it, American Krogan made a long, very long series about the politics of BioShock. A Jew making a game called Judas is kinda funny, but you just know it will be another muh White authority bad story like Infinite.

Also he's a cuck, not like based Taro.

Yes, but We Happy Few played it up as a grimdark, drug-induced freak show like you'd expect out of the actual 60's. This whole artistic theme is "What if we make the 60's qUiRkY" when in reality everyone with a brain knows that trying to make the era of LSD, bellbottoms, and free love qUiRkY is just slathering the 1960's in a coat of modern paint and missing the entire actual zeitgeist of the decade, and it just comes off as shallow, unimaginative, and completely uninspired.

Now, someone with a brain could create a setting where that sort of glossed-over nostalgia is being shamelessly exploited by corporate interests, but alas, that would require a talented writing staff willing to take potshots at Current Year.

That's a good way to read it. I guess these boomers and xers really want to supplant the 50's as the vision of 'the golden age'. Shame the 60's, by all accounts, was horrible.

There it is.

I'll admit I enjoyed the first two Bioshocks more than Infinite; but I'm also one of those luddites who don't need deep moral quandries when the main way I interact with the environment is riddling it with bullets. I'm not saying it's not needed, in fact it's kinda important to understand why Rapture failed; but I'm a no-name who skyjacked an airplane, crashed it (with one survivor), then spend the rest of the time walking around and killing everything (to be fair, they tried to kill me first). But that's it, I don't need Ayn Rand or Collectivism or whatever; I'm a fucking drug-addicted murder machine who is out to kill my dad because some fucking Paddie asked politely.

That aside, I'll probably play this, just to say I did.

Its not even boomers doing this. The number of people who lived through the 60's with you know... Vietnam and racial strife and communist terrorists don't want to see that decade return. Its the horribly uneducated younger generations who want the other stuff I mentioned while forgetting the dark background everyone took drugs and had casual sex to forget about.

So the xers and millenials who were told stories of this progressive utopian golden decade...how hilarious it all is. To praise a golden shadow only to find out it was a mere piss stain.

I like 60's aesthetics and even I can admit that was truly the decade where the rot became terminal.

And the 80s was where we tried to put in the Chemo

There was a large hippie type thing in high-school growing up; especially with a lot of the girls. They wanted bellbottoms, tyedye shirts, Peace Symbol Shirts, hackey sack, and all other sorts of shit. But that's because they were looking at it through rose-colored glasses; but I understand why, it's only until somewhat recently have people started talking about how evil everything was back then. The entire outlook flipped; where when I was a kid, it was all "everything was cool man," and now "EVERYONE WAS RACIST!" As for drugs and casual sex... that was part of the appeal to my generation, it wasn't seen as a negative.
