Holy shit, there goes my weekend.
It's rough around the edges and clearly akaimato's first game, but a lot of the sauce in Demons Roots is in it and worth a play for sure. It's crazy how much he had planned out even back then. It's the Black Souls 1 to Demons Roots' Black Souls 2 if that makes sense.

If it's close to the quality of the sequel it will be worth the time.

I need to replay Black Souls 1 and 2, I remember getting stuck in 1 and then seeing the clusterfuck that is the endings and noping out on how convoluted it seems to get the true ending. But it keeps coming up so maybe I'll give it another go.

I'm not sure if it's in the official Steam versions (still can't believe they're actually on Steam), but the old DLSite versions had a README with a guide on how to get all endings for both games. For the most part it's straight forward with the only ending being convoluted to get is the true end in BS1 and Ending G in BS2. The true ending of BS2 is fortunately in it's own area as it was DLC.

Is it the case where it's enough to get the true ending for the first game, or all the endings are worth playing?

You don't need to do every single individual girl ending for BS1 unless you like them I guess, but you absolutely should aim for Endings C and D. Those set you up immediately for Black Souls 2.

Okay done with King Exit, it's definitely rougher than the sequel and way more raunchy (though all those scenes can be skipped without altering the plot in any way). Still a lot of nice moments and a strong ending, it raises some potential sequel hooks that hopefully will get elaborated on in future games. Combat is meh and final bosses are just damage sponges, I did hoard a fuckton of stat boosters for no real reason that could have sped up the process.

I don't know if I'll recommend King Exit before Demons Roots, it's not as memorable and smaller in scale. A lot of its plot elements are introduced more organically in the sequel, and while knowing it helps understand later parts in the plot, it doesn't change that much and few things are lightly retconned. On the other hand King Exit really enjoys a lot of elements that are more important in the sequel.

I guess I'll play Tales of Phantasia Cross next.

I probably would agree with most of this but there's nothing that could take away the reveal in Demons Roots in the book country on my first playthrough. That shit was peak fiction. I also think akaimato really outdid himself with the way Diana was introduced in DR. Having it be a hard cut POV switch was such a good call and I thought it'd be the best the game would get until you get on the path to the good ending.

My hot take is that I think RPGM games really don't take advantage of the combat aspect as much as they should. I never really felt mechanically pressed playing Demons Roots or King Exit and the closest I got to really getting in deep and loving the mechanics was LISA intentionally and Black Souls II unintentionally. LISA's combo moves for Brad that change based on the situation is a great idea and BS2's DLC3 is made for the player to push the gameplay engine to the limits with menu exploits and what not and I really like it.
Bravely default 1 is now on steam, always been interested in the 2 games. How are the games for any of you that played it?
I heard great things about Bravely Default 1 and Bravely Second but Bravely Default 2 is boring as sin. I didn't even get to the end of the first dungeon before dropping it, it's so fucking boring. I still got BD1 anyway because I've been waiting for that game to coem to PC ever since I heard it was getting a remaster, hopefully I like it more than BD2.

I also started playing Tales of the Abyss. I still don't like Team Symphonia styled combat but I think the cast and story are good so far. The cutscenes are clearly limited by technology of the time, but they still have a lot of soul and the expressions do a lot of work to make everything extremely good. They're clearly working with what they have and up until the point I'm currently at right now, I'd say they're doing a pretty good job.

It's a limitations, but I appreciate those games for being more experimental. Stuff like character deaths is basically extinct in modern jrpgs. Still, King Exit had some fun changes in the formula.

I liked 1, which has a lot of cool ideas and fun character building. 2 is ass though.

Tales of the Abyss
One of the games I wish I could play from the start as a new experience.

I am currently playing Fate/EXTRA CCC after finishing the first EXTRA a few days ago. I just can't believe it is that good compared to to first experience, I barely beat the prologue and everything is better so far. The characters, the presentation, the plot, the visuals and it is all in the same engine.

I really thing the first game had less involvement of Nasu, and it really shows. And I am not even talk about the main plot but smaller sections of the game like NPC dialogues.

I am quite enjoying the game so far, such an upgrade to the original one that got a very balistic missile news this week with the remake.

Bravely Default 1 is an okay game that is held back by the Gimmicks and Balance.

Bravely Default 2 is one of the single worst games I have ever played.

"Every enemy is going to have some sort of counter attack Trigger"
"Wow that is annoying and unbalanced, so lets put in a passive that lets you evade counters"
"Oh..the counter system no longer does anything because you just put the evade counter passive on"
"Let's just make every boss gain Brave points instead of countering..oh and make end game bosses counter everything so every action you take gives an enemy a brave point"

Is the gameplay still glorified Rock Paper Scissors?

Yeah but now if you know their patterns, you can autoclick the button and fill it in.

I dont like the gameplay that much, even more after completing the game with Tamamo that gave me quite a challenge.

First boss fight was Liz and this time I am playing with Nero and I almost died with 9hp left

BD1 is good. It has a reputation for padding but most of it is inconsequential and can be skipped.

I'm glad it's on Steam now and I bought it, but I'm annoyed that it's the censored western version instead of the JP original. I also picked up the JP version of it on Switch 2 which is apparently uncensored.

(The censorship isn't as bad as what they did to Bravely Second but it does feel a little insulting that bikinis and exposed midriff are considered too risque for a game that's aimed at boomer RPG fans)

So after a while, i got off my ass and managed to kill Calasmos and beat the main story of Dragon Quest 11, and i gotta say.

This is a contender for the best game in the series in my opinion.
I know alot people dislike Act 3 because of The party essentialy losing most of their development from Act 2, But goddamn it alot of the shit you can do like Putting Jasper's spirit to rest with Hendrick, Rebuilding Cobblestone with the help of alot of the side characters, etc. make me too happy to care all that much.
And goddamn, the whole twist at the ending where The Hero, Serena and Veronica go the Yggdrasil, meet Yggdragon, and Yggdragon dubs the Hero Erdrick, then the cutscene at the end that connects this game to Dragon Quest 3 was so goddamn cool.

Currently, I'm fighting the End of TIme at Tickington and he's been kicking my ass. There's a good reason as to why he's the only animated 2D enemy. At first i tried a party of Erik, Sylvando, Serena and Veronica, but they did not last with how many turns EOT gets, So now I'm attaempting it with Hero, Erik, Hendrick and Rab.
God help me on the Timewymn and Harma Secret Trials though.

Already bought DQ3 HD-2D and cannot wait to see how they connect the entire Erdrick trilogy to DQ11.

Decided to replay .hack IMOQ because I'm tired of new video games and the announcement of .hack//ZERO has got me excited for this franchise again.

Goddamn I'd forgotten just how bad the controls in IMOQ were. Like the weird pseudo turn based delay on actions coupled with the fact that monsters move around the battlefield like they're on meth is incredibly jarring.

It's not just that, it's also a massive mood shift that wipes away every dark aspect of the plot for the most reddit shit possible conclusion. It's like the devs were afraid of a backlash so every interesting point gets sanded down.
Yeah, I will agree that the darker tone of Act 2 was an awsome direction, and while i don't mind the more lighter mood of Act 3, I perfer Act 2 in terms of story and tone. I mainly like Act 3 for how much stuff there is to do compared the the other two Acts.

I do wonder if there was a way they could've written Act 3 in a way people would be happy with. I'm generally fine with stories that have a "Fixing something that went wrong in the past" type of plot but understand why alot of people tend to hate them.
Im sure there's a way they could keep that darker tone while also having the whole going back in time stuff.
