My brother's going to be crushed if this game turns out to be bad.
The Banjo games have been a pretty big part of our childhood and he's really looking forward to playing this game.
I'm not totally convinced, I was speaking to a business advisor I know recently and mentioned this situation as he has helped them in the past. While a lot of it "goes over his head completely" he's told me some interesting things, alongside stuff I checked myself.
Playtonic is headed by three former Rareware bods who were mostly middle managers, I.E they were mostly the types which worked at the coal face and of those three, none of them came into management posts straight up, so they worked their way up before deciding they wanted to go their own way and give it a try, so they know the culture better than most. They're the "initial core" that worked on stuff like Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong Country etc.
Recruitment of staff wise, it seems they drew from several former Rare employees when their contracts came up, which again leads to a decent core staff who know what the shit they're doing, buuuuut these guys aren't the classical gods we know and love, and are more Perfect Dark Zero and Kinect Sports guys. Not incompetent by any stretch but maybe a tiny bit
souless in their creation.
Final tier are kids fresh from Uni, they apparently asked for "only the best" and were "incredibly picky" with their choices to even do
any work on the project whatsoever, let alone offering them actual jobs. Uni's love to give their kids actual "life fire" shit these days in exchange for job offers and letters of recommendation.
The Kickstarter made them expand a lot faster than they had initially planned, with an initial team of about 10 leaping very quickly to 20, and now topping out at 26 as seen today, and its possible they expanded too quickly, hence the partnership with Team 17 and the fuckup we're seeing now.
Anyways, long and short of it... Having thought on it and done a little digging around... I don't think it'll suck. The
actual company behind it are all super passionate and, in the case of the management/founders do it out of sheer love. So I doubt it will suck.
Their publisher however... definitely does.
And Jonno's an idiot.
