Republican Sen. John McCain, an internationally renowned Vietnam War hero who served for 30 years in the Senate representing Arizona, died Saturday due to complications stemming from brain cancer.

His office said in a statement that his wife Cindy McCain and their family were alongside him when he died.

"At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years," his office said.

McCain, 81, was a part of many of the past three decades' most significant political moments. He was the 2008 Republican presidential nominee in a contest he lost to President Barack Obama. He also sought the presidency in 2000, mounting a primary campaign against President George W. Bush.

A graduate of the Naval Academy, the Arizona Republican followed both his father and grandfather, who were four-star admirals, into the US Navy, where he carried out airstrike missions.

also for those of you who dont know what he did in 'nam that made him so damn infamous well here you go.

I didn't much like the smug fuck in life, but death is the great leveller. We all stand equal in front of it. Godspeed to the beyond you mad bald bastard, and may your judgement be swift

I wonder why so many people on here or anywhere for that matter are rejoicing over a politician dying? What did John McCain do to get that (besides run against Obama and lose?) I don't know enough of the guy to celebrate or to be too sad over.

he basically violated article 5 and ratted out his buddies made a taped confession and some other foul shit.

Nobody likes a hawk, especially after +15 years of useless squandering of lives and resources.

Regardless of how you feel about the guy's death, the kind of cancer that killed him was kind of interesting to read about. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glioblastoma

It looks like it's one of those that if you get it you're most likely going to die no matter what you do.
Yeah, 'glioblastoma" pretty much translates to, 'Welcome to Death's waiting room. No need to take a number; he'll definitely get to you."

Cancer, of any kind, is such a shitty way to die, it's hard for me to wish it on anybody. Whatever issues I've had with Senator McCain over the years, I would certainly not have wished it on him. RIP, and all my sympathies to his family.

This is pretty much how I feel. I generally try not to wish death or extreme torture on people unless I consider the seriously evil. ("Politicians I Don't Like" is not one of them). I find it to be bad karma.

I wasn't a big fan of the guy, but I didn't find him outright evil. My condolences to his family -- cancer is a fucking bitch.
