Republican Sen. John McCain, an internationally renowned Vietnam War hero who served for 30 years in the Senate representing Arizona, died Saturday due to complications stemming from brain cancer.

His office said in a statement that his wife Cindy McCain and their family were alongside him when he died.

"At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for sixty years," his office said.

McCain, 81, was a part of many of the past three decades' most significant political moments. He was the 2008 Republican presidential nominee in a contest he lost to President Barack Obama. He also sought the presidency in 2000, mounting a primary campaign against President George W. Bush.

A graduate of the Naval Academy, the Arizona Republican followed both his father and grandfather, who were four-star admirals, into the US Navy, where he carried out airstrike missions.

also for those of you who dont know what he did in 'nam that made him so damn infamous well here you go.

ITT: People vociferously both defend and shit on John Mccain post-mortem because he said or did things they liked/disliked politically while pretending the other side is stupid for it.

He wasn't Satan himself but he certainly was no fucking angel. I'm only glad the guy's gone because he was taking up a senate seat that should've been filled by someone who was actually capable of doing the job, no matter what political affiliation they are.

Okay after posting my trolly comment (which I still stand by, as I don't think McCain was a good person), my sympathy is starting to kick in a little bit:

I had no idea that McCain's mother was still alive. At 106. Holy shit. And according to reports, her mind is still sharp.

It must be difficult to live that long and to see your children pass away. I can't imagine.

...well you're not wrong. There probably should be some kind of max age requirement for office, anyway. Nobody who lives as long as he did isn't going to be dumb. He shouldn't have been in office as long as he was.

McCain was about 80% bad ideas, but he was consistent. I kinda respect him, but he doesn't rate an "F" from me.

He made it farther in life than most men with no eyebrows.

he basically violated article 5 and ratted out his buddies made a taped confession and some other foul shit.

Thank you for that piece of information. I heard he was tortured in Vietnam (which was an unnecessary war BTW), which can break anybody really. PTSD in particular because of the graphic depictions of war.

So was he tortured until he absolutely had to break down and betray his fellow soldiers and country, or did he refuse to break down and betray his fellow soldiers and country? You're having trouble keeping your stanning narrative straight from one sentence to the next.

Are you talking about the 1969 recording? Who did he sold out? Sounded like he was given a confession, I don't hear any specific names or locations being given. And Trump critizied an actual solider that was captured. Who choses to be captured? That's distasteful, especially when he doesn't actively support the military as he claims to.

I can't really feel any joy in someone dying of brain cancer, unless they're a communist. Despite McCain's flaws he wasn't that.

Unless they were really heinious as a person, I honestly don't see pride in bashing a man that just died. I am actively researching what McCain was to figure out who he was.

No, it was specifically said he was too strong to give into things that would have broken most men, while simultaneously absolving him of the burden of being broken.
There's obviously a gradient. He seemed to view making some dumb speech that nobody would believe, except the Vietnamese themselves, as less of a betrayal than being released before his fellow prisoners. Still it was something he regretted for the rest of his life. Of course he was mortal, he wasn't a superhero or something. I disagreed with many of his views but to attack his exemplary military career is very low. Unfortunately it's not unexpected.

Rest in Peace. I thought he was a good man, who I didn't always agree with. He served his country when it was common for rich people to try and get out of service, and he did alot. This always will be in the top ten anime betrayals.

This is the internet, where the truly exceptional of exceptional gentlemen just take statements and run with them without even checking the evidence. Coincidentally, a majority of the same people will be up in arms if someone like Trump died of cancer and people made edgy/admonishing comments about him.

Damn, that didn't take long, usually I expect at least a month after official "withdrawing treatment" for a terminal illness patient to finally succumb.

That was so quick, it must've been practically eating him alive, poor guy......

This is really funny. You know when he was being tortured, the Vietnamese found out was the son of an admiral, they offered to let him go...but he said no because he refused to leave his men behind and stayed in hell for them. I dare any of you (or Trump for that matter) to have the balls he had to do that.

The Trumpfags in this thread getting mad on the Internet because some old guy died of brain cancer are literally no better than the fat rainbow-haired troons doing the exact same thing in other corners of the Internet.

More proof for horseshoe theory, I guess.

I know people like to shit on Palin, but you can actually see Russian territory from the United States.

Just saying...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diomede_Islands

I have many things to say about Sarah Palin (some good, some bad).

However, she was a pretty good Governor (and a POPULAR one too). She just became completely damaged goods after the 2008 Election, and I thought it was downright ghoulish of McCain to throw her under the bus like he did. It was because of Palin that he even stood a chance for a little while in the months leading up to the election, as the conservative voting base was energized in the polls right after he chose her.

And I think it was TERRIBLE how the media and the Democrats treated her. She was bullied out of office as the Democrats kept suing her for bogus "ethics charges," which was costing the taxpayers a lot of money. What else was she supposed to do at that point? It was to the point that even after Palin resigned as Governor, someone from the press literally moved in next door to her and was spying on her kids in the back yard or something along those lines. And don't even get me started on the vile comments that were directed towards her because she didn't abort her down syndrome child.

These days, there's a lot that's really fucked up with the Palin family (especially in regards to her kids), but ... You know ... Of course they turned out that way. I'm not surprised. They spent their childhood and teenage years in a media circus.

Palin has said a lot of things that have made me facepalm since the 2008 Election, and it's fine that people disagree with her, but the way her political opponents treated her (and made it SO personal) was just fucked up all around.

EDIT: Also ... Palin never said "I can see Russia from my house!" Tina Fey said that. In an admittedly hilarious skit.

Palin specifically said that Alaska is so close to Russia that you can actually see it from some locations in the state ... Which is a factual statement. It was amazing how a parody somehow became the narrative; people STILL think she said that SNL line to this day.
