What the hell do you farm yak for, anyway? I thought they were used for pulling ploughs in Tibet and then they just settled on eating Yak meat and drinking yak milk because they already had them there. But if you've got tractors, why not just farm cows? You're more likely to be able to sell beef/milk/butter/leather over yak meat/yak milk/yak butter/yak leather (I'm not even sure the last one's a thing).

Although since this is Jeffree maybe he's planning on launching a new limited edition Jefree Starr Cosmetics yak milk facial toner and an array of yak fibre wigs.

It is a thing. People do use yak hides and fur for things. Yak hair is used in a lot of high quality blankets from what little I've seen of it.

I might have misinterpreted your comment, but why kill the animal for its fur if you're not going to eat the meat as well? That feels pretty wasteful.

You can gather the fur and use it to make yarn without killing the animal in the same way you can gather wool from sheep to make yarn without killing the animal.

It did occur to me after my comment that yak fibre is a thing. I've never seen it but I do know LVMH have used it in the past and obviously Jeffree is a whore for Louis Vuitton. But it's so incredibly niche. It's like alpaca wool and the tranch- I have an alpaca wool (blend) jumper and I really like it, but there's not a massive consumer or wholesale demand for alpaca wool vs regular wool.

And that's what brings me back to cows. Jeffree loves his high end leather goods. Companies like LVMH will generally source their leather from special tanneries that in turn source their leather from specific cattle farms. Those cattle farms specifically raise cattle for their hides, and the beef is just a byproduct; the hides are more valuable than the beef. This is partially because high end leather goods will only cut from e.g. top grain split calf leather, and won't cut panels where there's blemishes (e.g. the cow/calf rubbed against a fence or got bitten by an insect) so it ends up taking three hides to make one wallet. Admittedly this is usually in Spain and Italy rather than Wyoming, but there'll be a domestic market for cattle hides.

Now some leather goods companies might experiment with, say, ostrich leather as a novelty. But generally there's been a movement away from "exotics" and it's a niche market anyway. "I'm going to start a yak ranch" is such a random decision to make because your yak products (whatever it is) just don't have the same level of demand. I guess it's more along the lines of "I'm an eccentric millionaire who loves attention and a yak ranch sounds more interesting than a cattle ranch, and I'm not overly fussed about turning a profit".

He is the living embodiment of California assholes who move to the West.
I cannot get over how out of place he looks standing in the fields with livestock wearing head-to-toe fucking Gucci. Does he have any clue how ridiculous the juxtaposition of that is, or is he too high on the smell of his own ego to notice?

He‘s totally gonna hate farm life once the animals start shitting and requiring maintenance.

Yeah, but Yak fur has a bit of an odor that really doesn’t go away no matter how much it’s processed and cleaned.

Maybe it’s ok on purses or luggage because your nose isn’t right in them, but stay away from yak fur throws, scarves, wraps, etc…

No idea about the hides.

I legit lol'd at the photo ads and the opening. I am a total whore for pink eye shadow and I wouldn't touch this with someone else's brush. Like all J palettes, there are about three colors I would wear.

I am not going to lie, I love it. The photo shoot and the irreverence were on brand very KVD but extra vibes.

The issue is there are no good light pinks to use as a base. A lot of the pinks look very similar and whilst I am a total whore for pink, I am 50/50. I don't hate it but the color story has issues. Like who would it kill for a very pale salmon/pastel pink with white undertones for a base.
