“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Conceived by women in Hollywood to serve all industries, TIME’S UP is addressing power imbalances in the workplace to stop sexual harassment and promote equality. Graves, who is the President & CEO of National Women’s Law Center referenced Anita Hill when discussing important movements. Hill became a national figure in 1991 when she accused U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, her supervisor at the United States Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, of sexual harassment. “When she testified, and we had as a country, a really public conversation around harassment at the time, and what it looks like,” said Graves, “thousands of people came forward for the first time.”


Some reoccurring themes from this poignant conversation include intersectionality and inclusion. “Women of color are in the central hub of TIME’S UP. There is no TIME’S UP without women of color. There is no TIME’S UP without trans women, without women of different abilities,” said Smollett-Bell.


Smollett-Bell’s comments led to the introduction of the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund. Due to bullying from some of the accused lawyers’, Tchen felt it necessary to respond. The only way to put a stop to the silencing of women was to ensure that all women had access to lawyers and the fund was created to combat this issue.


The second half the session was devoted to an audience Q&A. During this portion, numerous women and one gentleman shared their own stories of harassment and how they took their stories and created organizations in their hometowns across the globe to help the cause.

Chicago cop union calls for feds to investigate prosecutor's actions in Smollett case

The labor union that represents Chicago’s front line police officers is asking the Justice Department to investigate Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s involvement in the Jussie Smollett hate crime investigation.

Foxx recused herself late in the investigation, but only after she intervened in the case by asking Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson to turn the investigation over to the FBI at the request of a Smollett relative and a former Obama administration official, according to newly-released emails and text messages.

Foxx and the Smollett relative were put in touch with each other by private attorney Tina Tchen, who served as chief of staff for First Lady Michelle Obama and as an assistant to President Barack Obama.

In a letter to John R. Lausch, the U.S. Attorney in Chicago, Fraternal Order of Police President Kevin Graham wrote, “private attorneys are not allowed to interfere with ongoing police investigations, particularly at the request of private individuals associated with subjects being investigated by the police.”

Graham calls Foxx’s late-hour recusal from the case, “wholly insufficient,” telling Lausch that her conduct “merits a review by your office.”

“In order for Ms. Foxx to properly charge and try this case, her entire office should have recused itself and a special prosecutor been appointed,” Graham argues in the letter dated Friday and provided to CWBChicago over the weekend.

In an email on Feb. 1—just two days after Smollett reported the purported hate crime—Foxx wrote an email to Tchen: “Spoke to Superintendent Johnson. I convinced him to reach out to FBI to ask that they take over the investigation.”

After receiving the same news from Foxx via text message later the same day, the unnamed Smollett relative replied, “OMG this would be a huge victory.”

“I make no guarantees,” Foxx responded, “but I’m trying.”

“Victory of what? For whom? Why?” Graham asks in his letter to Lausch.

The FBI never took control of the investigation into Smollett’s elaborate hate crime allegations, but the bureau has been leading a separate federal investigation of a threat letter laced with white powder that was mailed to Smollett about a week before he reported being attacked. The powder was found to be crushed acetaminophen, according to Chicago Fire Department testing cited in a CPD report.

Personally I think it's the other way around. Dem's came out hard and fast for smollet with some very big statements, and then very quickly it looked like he faked that shit. So DNC operatives do all they can to try and delay or scuffle the investigation.

If it went to the feds, there would be time lost for a handover, influence would probably be used to assign just one or two people and not the dozens of CPD officers, and the case would proceed at the speed of an iceberg. If they DID get the case handed over, I bet you a bajillion dollars that DNC aligned media would have rapidly dropped reporting on the case so that when/if it finally came out smollett was full of shit most people would have already forgotten about it. But with the case staying with the CPD, who would have a massive fucking axe to grind by now, the DNC operatives just ghosted (but not before hooking smollett up with lawyers) so as to not be seen and pointed at as they pull obvious strings.

Right now he already pointed at a video of him being attacked and said "yep, those two guys did it". And police can prove those two guys were the Nigerians.

So at the very least, someone's getting pinched, whether Smollett for lying at that moment, or the Nigerians for attacking him.

We just gotta hope it's the more fun option of Smollett being the one to get pinched.

Normally I'd call but R. Kelly walked from his case in Chicago and that was the one where there was a tape of him pissing on an underage girl. I think Smollett is screwed in some way though. Maybe he beats the state charges or gets off easy over some technicality, but the federal charges aren't going to be anywhere near as easy and the Somoli guys are going to testify against him since they seem to have some knowledge of and involvement in that as well.
