Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

I thought that was actually exactly why he hired the Africans to pretend to beat him up: no one bit on the fake anthrax letter he tried first.
yes exactly! what do you think he would have done next??? I'm dying to know what he would have done after being ignored twice. He mighta even necked himself in some really public fashion.

Considering that Jussie is such a drama and attention whore that he faked a hate crime, he's going to tard cum this for all it's worth. Now i'm glad this is going to be filmed, because I look forward to all the histrionics and ach-ting he's going to pull for the cameras.

You're right. There's no possibility of him being smart enough to stfu and get out of his own way. This is clearly evidenced that he decided to peacock to a session he wasn't even required to be at.

Which speaks volumes of his lawyer who had one job today: tell his jig client to shut the fuck up. Any ambulance chaser knows that. He's either exceptional or very confident.

I cant wait wait to see the gifs. I'd pay a fortune for someone to paint just one of the walls green. For science.

He needs to pay reparations to all the white Trump supporters he hurt with his lie.

I'm sure he'll find a nice cracker in jail. It'll come out of Juss' walet or out of his ass.

This is Smollett, not his lawyer. No lawyer would ever advise that kind of swaggering public posturing if they genuinely had their client's best interest in mind. It's always better to sit down and shut the fuck up.

The TMZ article claims he attended for optics, which fits with his interminable narcissism and insecurity. Every bad PR move Smollett has made in this case has been to assert his masculinity to other blacks. He loved the clout of victimhood at first, but hated coming off as a bitch and his ego finally got the better of him the instant he called himself the "gay Tupac" and claimed he fought back. Even his mugshot seethes with arrogance.

If anything I'd bet his lawyer is restraining the worst of his behaviour. At the very least I imagine he'd be raging on Twitter in a desperate effort to assert himself unless his counsel and PR firm were stopping him.

That’s what they call a prison wallet on the inside.

Something I’ve been wondering, has it been said what will happen to his character in the show? I saw an ad the other day where one of the characters was in the hospital, but I don’t think it was him.

He'll be off to London where his bf lives never to be heard of again 's my guess.
I think recording for season 5 was like 90% done when Justin's shit hit the fan so I'm not imagining elaborate story line changes since season 6 is looking more and more like a pipe dream at this point anyway.

Yes I leech trash tv

I think this Smollett case is going to end up causing a huge rash of widespread discussion/argument in society over the "listen and believe" mentality and the problem of not giving due process to those accused of sexual assault and hate crimes. Especially now that the proceedings are going to be televised.

nah it'll just get memory-holed by most media outlets because of how much it contradicts the narrative.
Woke journos need to start being affected by the monster they created before the discussion about "listen and believe" is honestly addressed by them. The lawsuit with the Covington kids is more likely to result in that than some utterly irrelevant actor being a sped.

Yeah, it won't be Smollett alone. The covington case happening at the same time will affect it too though. But really, with the courtroom being televised? Countless reshares all over youtube? Of course silicon valley will be taking them down as fast as they come up but sooner or later the number of clips of "victims" forced to admit they lied is going to make it so they can't just wish away the question of just why we're supposed to keep always believing.

:optimistic::optimistic::optimistic: I admit, but these are two big counters to "victims don't lie" and they're all over mainstream news and discussion, not just on internet boards.

If it wasn't going to happen in reference to a potential Supreme Court Justice, it was never going to happen.

And it didn't.

To be fair the average American is far more interested in a c-list Fox drama celeb than they are anybody in any government position.

And even then, it won't teach them they did anything wrong, they'll just learn that they can't say this stuff or they get a very very large bill.... they will never be able to draw the connection between their bad behavior and bad consequences, the progressive stack is religion to them, telling them they're right and need not question themselves.

The cunts still trot out Anita Hill, like she's this huge victim for failing to take down Clarence Thomas, despite no one ever coming forward then or since with any stories even remotely like the shit she said.

pounded in his Jussie by the law!
Title of the next Chuck Tingle book when?

Good enough for me. As long as they learn the stove is hot, that's good enough.

After Michelle Obama's former aide's urging, prosecutor pushed for FBI to investigate Smollett

CHICAGO – After being contacted by a former senior Obama administration official, the Chicago-area's top prosecutor last month requested that the city police turn over their investigation of an alleged attack on "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett to the FBI, according to texts and emails released by the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.

Tina Tchen, who worked as former first lady Michelle Obama’s chief of staff during her time in the White House, first contacted Kim Foxx by text on Feb. 1 and said the actor's family had "concerns" about the investigation, according to the communications. Tchen, a Chicago-based attorney, is also the co-founder of the Times Up Legal Defense Fund.

At the time of the correspondence, Smollett was still considered by police to be the victim of an assault. The actor was later charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false report for allegedly staging an attack to make him look like the victim of a brutal hate crime.

“Spoke to the Superintendent Johnson,” Foxx emailed Tchen on Feb. 1, referring to the city’s top cop, Eddie Johnson. “I convinced him to Reach out to FBI to ask that they take over the investigation.”

Foxx also texted with one of Smollett’s relatives, whose name was redacted in copies of the communication released by her office.

“Spoke to the superintendent earlier, he made the ask,” Foxx wrote. “Trying to figure out logistics. I’ll keep you posted.”

The relative responded, “Omg this would be a huge victory.”

“I make no guarantees, but I’m trying,” Foxx replied back.

Foxx recused herself from the investigation before Smollett was charged. Her first deputy, Joe Magats, is overseeing the case.

Foxx said in an interview with the Chicago Sun-Times that Smollett's family was concerned that aspects of the police investigation were being leaked to media.

“They had no doubt about the quality of the investigation, but believed that the FBI would have a tighter lid on the information,” Foxx told the outlet.

Anthony Guglielmi, the police department's chief spokesman, said Foxx conveyed the request to Johnson that Tchen and the Smollett family member wanted the FBI to take over the investigation. He said the case was not moved to federal authorities because “there was a lack of evidence” to support that Smollett was the victim of a federal hate crime.

“There was no federal jurisdiction,” said Guglielmi, who added the FBI provided police with technical assistance throughout the investigation. “If there was ever a point where they felt it was within federal jurisdiction, it would have easily gone there.”

Tchen did not respond to a request for comment.

A grand jury indicted Smollett last week on 16 felony counts, accusing him of staging a racist and homophobic attack by two masked men near his Chicago apartment.

Police allege that Smollett, who is black and gay, staged the Jan. 29 attack because he was unhappy with his salary and wanted to bolster his profile.

He told police that two assailants beat him and threw a rope around his neck while hurling racial and anti-gay slurs at him. Smollett also told police that one of the attackers also yelled, “This is MAGA country,” a reference to President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan.

Police arrested two men, brothers who knew Smollett and had worked with him on “Empire,” weeks after the incident and identified them as suspects. They later released the brothers, Abel and Ola Osundairo, without charge.

The brothers told police that Smollett plotted the assault, gave them money to purchase supplies for the ruse and paid them $3,500 for taking part in the alleged plot.

Smollett is free on $100,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

:story:

Because if the Trump-Russia-collusion debacle has taught us anything, it's shown us that The FBI really knows how to keep a tight lid on the info.
