'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Back at ya, dumbass, if police are sometimes willing to cover up crimes to get what they want then it's likely that minorities are just as fallible and willing to do shady shit. This reads like out of t_d's playbook, "something doesn't seem right here, all of a sudden I care about waiting it out before judgement when I never have before now".

I think it's interesting to see these liberals admit that the story was suspicious from the beginning all of a sudden (See VICE and TYT f. ex), then next they'll turn around and talk about how this will be so hurtful of real victims of hate crimes. Where the fuck where you a couple of weeks ago when it was heresy to question Smollett's story then? If the story was fishy from the start and the media still ran with it almost everywhere, celebrities, journalists and politicians still tweeted in his support and you still got shit for questioning the story, how is the problem then that victims won't be believed? The story shows the complete opposite and that people needed a refresher on how some people will lie about anything. So this was all good.

Because the real point is that if someone claims a hate crime, anyone who doubts it is a Nazi whether or not they turn out to be right. You're supposed to suspend disbelief of even a ludicrous claim because woke.
 
Datalounge is not working correctly. coincidentally, the same day that a letter was mailed to Jesse a thread was started on DL asking the best way to anonymously send someone a letter without getting caught. Okay that was legit funny. The Daily Show should do more shows like that. Hell retooling it to get rid of the anti-Trump bias might make it watchable. I legit watched that 3 times in a row. If that was actually slapped together in a short time (I'm assuming Trevor is joking about how short of a time it took) then they might do better just working off the cuff than whatever over planning crap they're doing before. Whoever wrote that skit deserves a raise.
 
It's almost like if late night shows have a fair balance of funny things everyone can laugh at and political commentary they can be fairly watchable.

Here's what I don't get, if the cops really wanted to frame Jussie for something, isn't the easy solution to just plant a gun or some drugs on him? Why hire two guys to beat him up, and when he reports it, get him for filing a false police report, which, even if found guilty of, he won't get automatic jail time for, yet he certainly would for a framed homicide/drug dealing?

Hell, if they have evidence he was trying to buy ecstasy, they probably don't even have to plant anything on him, just search his car or dressing room with a bogus warrant from an "informant".

But no, Occam's Razor don't exist to these people the more convoluted the plan, somehow, the MORE likely it is to work/be the truth!

We live in a time where we can’t make fun of both sides because clearly one side is Nazi hitler and the other side morally right.

If the left learned to laugh at itself and the crazies within their party instead of validating every insane idea we wouldn’t be in this mess.
 
It brings me unmitigated joy that every other day the media abandons its plan for how to defend this meltdown for increasingly childish methods. We're now on "nuh-uh, the hoax itself is a hoax!"

We'll be on "space aliens did it!" by the end of next week!

It'd certainly help if the left would stop trying to act as though they're even minutely capable of presenting a united front, because then they'd be able to disavow Smollett as a nutjob, state that he obviously doesn't represent their views or aims, and move on. But if they did that then they couldn't claim every slight against a minority, real or perceived, as an attack against all which they are and what they stand for.

Not a very great tactic, as it turns out.

While this is true, the person crying wolf still needs to face consequences, as they've made people less likely to believe when a real wolf comes around. That's the whole moral of the story.
 
The old "it started a conversation" argument has kinda morphed into the equally-illogical "If it COULD have happened, then why does it matter if it DIDN'T?"

Looks like Sandra Bland got arrested for being a combative shit to a testy cop during a traffic stop. After no one would come bail her out of jail she became despondent and then hung herself. Her family claimed no way she'd ever suicide, they claimed that it was murder. Later it came out that she had attempted suicide before or at least threatened to do so at least a couple of times. Family sues, and in the end the jail was fingered as the responsible party in a civil lawsuit because they didn't check up on her often enough: 2 million dollar settlement.

Not too many parallels there with Jussie Smollett's hoax.

I don't think anyone is arguing this hoax as proof racism doesn't exist, just as proof that Jussie is a liar. Because he is.
