'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

There hasn't been a for-reals lynching of a black person in the US in half a century. The recent anti-lynching law's only purpose is to stoke the flames of racial tension.

You hit on the crux of the whole thing. Jussie's story has always been not the story of an assault or a crime, but rather the Hollywood version of a crime. Everything about it read like a "ripped from the headlines" episode of Law & Order. So 100% fake. The Cop's knew Jussie was full of shit from the moment they encountered him. As did the ER. And anyone else who has any experience dealing with real victims of trauma or violent events. They don't look and act like that. You believe them because you can see the trauma in any number of ways. And once you see it once, you can always see it whenever it presents. Jussie had none of it. TV doesn't show what real victims are like. This is why "Listen and Believe" is such bullshit. You don't have to "Listen and Believe", you know, and you know at first contact. It's hundreds of little tells. And you get very very good at seeing them. And when you don't see them, it's glaringly obvious.

Did anyone archive Jussie's Tweet about how "salt, anthrax and cocaine can all look like sugar" or whatever? He posted it a few days before the letter arrived?

The letter was delivered locally via the Chicago branches of the post office. Chicago government employees. It could have had BOOOMB!!!! scrawled on it, be loudly ticking, and be leaking glowing green fluid and they wouldn't flag on anything suspicious about it. Pass it along, let it be somebody else's problem. Add to this that given the local Nigerian and similar populations, the post office is likely numb to seeing stuff scrawled this badly.

I wondered about that. I’m sure Jussie gets a nice paycheck from Empire but I thought the high rise he lives in might be a bit above his means. A sugar daddy like Tawan Davis letting Jussie use or sublet the apartment would make sense.

What cracks me up is that it's so bad, and so attention-getting in its over-the-top badness. Think about it--assuming you wanted to send a public figure anthrax through the mail, wouldn't you make sure the envelope looked as innocent and normal as possible, rather than something that practically begs to be quarantined (and by quarantined I mean, "tossed in the trash without a second thought")? Nobody wants to open Crazy Mail without at least wearing gloves because at the very least you might get various bodily wastes/secretions as a present. But a nice, normal-looking envelope, with a phony but legit-looking return address? The target will open that without even thinking about it.

ETA to clarify: The only reason to send something that blatantly crazy-looking is if you're sending it to yourself, and expect others to see it and believe that you have truly unhinged, insane people threatening to kill you. It's just so fucking theatrical.

That said, I wonder if anybody was smart enough to wear gloves while gluing down that text, and during the entire time they were handling the letter and envelope. I'm going to guess not. So if there's even one clear fingerprint to be found in the glue, or on the glossy paper of the text, or on the stamps, that just happens to be a perfect match Jussie Smollett's, I'm going to laugh myself sick.
