'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

This guy is one of the stars of a TV show, but I think people massively over-estimate how much a star on a nigger show on Fox will be getting paid. He's also trying to become a singer, which means he's probably already signed his life away to a record company. He's probably in the whole for hundreds of thousands to the record company, which they have probably lost already but they don't care because they bought a share in Rihanna or Ariana Grande and can afford to throw away money on losers like Jussie.

So when the lawyer saw Jussie's financial situation, listened to his stupid fucking story and saw his interviews he thought there's no way he's working for free on this dumpster fire.

There will be lawyers who are prepared to become the next Avenetti, but publicity is pretty much the only payment any lawyer for this faggot is getting.

is it still a waste of time when the attorney is still being paid his usual rate though?
like yeah, i get that working with a lying niggerfaggot dramawhore is probably annoying as fuck, but he still got hollywood money...

Even if you're getting paid, sometimes it's just not worth it, especially when the client is actively undermining you and seems destined to go down in flames. At that point it's easier just to wash your hands of it and hope that your next client isn't so determined to self-sabotage. If I were a lawyer, I'd definitely prefer to not have this dumpster fire on my resume.

TMZ has a great story up

Jussie apparently made the cops very suspicious when he showed them where he was attacked and then pointed to a camera and said “good thing a camera is there to catch it.” Lol (The camera pointed in another direction, so my prediction he did try to stage it all for a viral video was correct.)

We get to see the hate mail, which looks like a preschooler sent it...and they’ve found a bunch of ripped up magazine in the Nigerians apartment. The FBI says thanks.

And Jesse said he was absolutely ready to press charges on his attackers, but then when cops revealed they had the Nigerians in custody he changed his mind.

God the cops must be having a million laughs with this epic moron at this point. He falls into every trap they lay like clockwork.

Everyone keeps mentioning "starting a conversation", but what conversation is this supposed to start? Don't beat up gay black men? Is this a controversial subject?

Here's what I'm more interested in: is it considered a hate crime if two black men hurt each other? Or does it have to be some bullshit "power dynamic" to be classified as a hate crime? We all know the answer (fuck all white men), but apparently it continues to elude progressives.

The real importance of this hoax is exposing more people to the lengths people are willing to go to become victims and gain pity points. People are desperate to be a victim in some way, shape, or form. Why is this sentiment receiving praise? Why is it wrong to want to be a strong person with thick skin?

If our nation were to go to war today and this pussified group of Twitter users had to enlist in the army, they would die on day 1 of basic training. Sad excuses for men.

Hate crime laws don’t require a power dynamic. Technically, a black person attacking a white person as a race-motivated attack can be prosecuted for a hate crime, although that rarely happens.

Prosecuting hate crimes is really difficult because it’s not just “oppressor” attacks “oppressed”. You have to prove the offender is a bigot and was motivated by bigotry. So, essentially, unless the attacker is a member of the KKK and screamed racial slurs during the attack, prosecutors will probably pass on prosecuting it as a hate crime and just go for regular assault instead. I always roll my eyes when liberals are outraged that an attack isn’t prosecuted as a hate crime, they assume it’s always a calculation of who’s the oppressor vs. the oppressed when there are very specific criteria that have to be met.

what the fuck is this shit

I’m just amazed at the incompetence. He could have driven to any small town, bought some gas as a paper trail and claimed it happened there, just have one of his Nigerian bros give him a black eye. Don’t even involve the cops, just post the story on social media, say BLM showed the police don’t care.
You get your attention and you don’t end up with fraud.

Love how the very first post in this thread contained more investigative work than the vast majority of pieces when this story broke (with the exception of e.g. Robby Soave who also doubted the U.Va story before anybody else dared to)...

The videos I've seen never mentioned the Trump tower and I've never seen any mention of these facts. Is this my
autistic.png
or are you lot shocked by how close Trump's building is and how the media didn't play this part up?

Journalists the spit out that kind of clickbait shit don't do any research of their own, so they'd never discover this or write about it unless someone else spoon fed it to them.

People intelligent enough to plan out something like this in a way that could actually succeed aren't stupid enough to go through with it.

Did anyone archive Jussie's Tweet about how "salt, anthrax and cocaine can all look like sugar" or whatever? He posted it a few days before the letter arrived?

e: nvm. was part of the "frauds r everywhere" tweet. what a moron.

People smart enough to committ lucrative crimes and get away with them tend to be smart enough to find a way to make equal or greater ROI through legal means..... it really does look like he was dumb enough to stage a second even more unlikely crime when the first one failed to get any public traction....

He was supposedly reluctant to call the cops, so I wonder if he was banking on using social media to generate outrage while leaving the cops out of it. Continuing to wear the “noose” might have been a way to create a trail on CCTV in case a non-official investigator (the news media, for example) got their hands on the video footage.

If he was reluctant, and that wasn’t yet another lie, I’ll give him a shred of credit that he’s not quite *that* stupid to get the cops involved in a hoax. He’s at least not as stupid as those black girls in Albany who attacked some white kids and then immediately called the cops to report a hate crime.

Those Nigerians must be princes. They have awfully good spelling and grammar on display, there.

My thing is what idiot at the PO decided "yep, this is legit" and let that envelope go through? It looks like a textbook example of a suspicious package, and there's a fucking poster featuring suspicious packages in every post office in the US, front and center.

Unless the stamps and postmark are fake and Smollett just found it lying in his mailbox..

tbh i didnt even know that public defenders are allowed to drop clients at all

They generally can't for no reason. Courts can actually appoint someone a random lawyer against the lawyer's will.

Lawyers can withdraw from representation by motion, for cause, but it has to be approved by a judge. Irreconcilable differences on how to pursue the case are one reason. For instance, if you know your client is going to commit a fraud on the court, you can refuse to assist this and are in fact obligated to prevent it and either may or must (depending on the bar association rules) tell the court about it.

Caps are here. I would be surprised if the tweets weren't archived by someone, but I don't have a link.
