'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

I just don't get what he had to gain from this. What was Empire's viewership like? Were they keeping an engaged audience? Did they need to get their name out there? Why is the manager lying and saying they were on the phone together when the alleged attack happened when the video footage with the only window of opportunity for the attack to happen without footage show him clearly not on the phone? Why confirm TMZ's lies and double down on them? You'd think after Covington the media might have learned their lesson? I even saw opinion pieces titled things like "Covington was a test and we failed" talking about how journos need to slow down and get all the information first but two weeks later that life lesson flies out the window to fuel the outrage machine again. They're wasting an awful lot of police time and resources, is Jussie going to face charges for that? What kind of riots will ensue when "Black gay actor arrested for being the victim of a hate crime" is the new headline of the week?

This is all the things running through my head about this. I just don't understand.

Attention is the answer.

Isn't really convincing anyone you want to be post-racial. As was previously mentioned, they want to be oppressed or at least pretend they are. If slavery was still going on I'm convinced that some of these crazies would be legitimately estatic because they'd finally be oppressed as much as they desire to be.

Niggers don't actually want to be post-racial because 85% of them would be out of work since at that point they couldn't scream about evil huwyte mayo folx anymore.

Money, Empire's ratings suck.

I have some... very sad news for you....

Slavery is very much still going on. Strangely these people who cry so much about the slavery of their ancestors are happy to show off their bling mined by the slavery of children currently living in africa.

Yeah, absolutely true and I probably should've clarified that I was only referring to historical American slavery.

It would devastate these privileged city dwellers to know then that slavery is happening in America's Agriculture and meat packing industries. It sure is easy to live in an urban area and never think about where your food comes from. I can drive about 40 minutes East of my hometown and find farms that bus up Mexicans across the border for the season and pay them $2/basket or less to pick tomatoes and strawberries all season and house them in shacks with public bathroom facilities. If they attempt to complain about working conditions it's easy to just deport them.

Slave labor today doesn't have whips and chains that the modern African American never experienced anyway, but it's still a prosperous business model in America. I wonder if it eats the racist activists up inside that the most disadvantaged people in our borders have lighter skin than them.

I just realized how badly I want a Mister Metokur video on this guy and his obviously faked attack.

No. It's not slave labor in any real sense, and claiming that equivalency is deeply disrespectful to actual victims of slavery. Slaves have no choice, literal or virtual. No agency in their own subjugation. Illegals crossing the border to work have plenty of actual choice in comparison.

But it's definitely exploitative as hell, and that's one more reason we should police our borders more effectively. I can pay slightly higher prices for food if it means illegal workers aren't, like, dying in makeshift bunk house fires and if it means businesses are forced to pay American workers competitive wages to do the same work.

NEW: Minutes ago at a media availability Chicago police superintendent Eddie Johnson said "We are making gains" in the Smollett investigation and "hopefully a resolution soon".

Johnson also said "Our job is to investigate and bring the individuals in" who allegedly attacked Smollett. He continued "today we have no reason to think he (Smollett) isn't being genuine".

The cops are closing in.

I love this because it's genuinely disingenuous. The police know they aren't going to find Schrödinger's klansmen but have to take any and all cases of assault seriously until proven otherwise. Given the high profile ( :story: as high profile as some C-list nobody can be anyways) nature of the case they are under more pressure to be as thorough as possible before officially calling bullshit.

Edit: spelling but shit won't update.

I'm not sure the Black community is buying this anymore than KF is. Besides the previously mentioned fact that they generally show no love to homo thugs, the reaction I've seen from people has been one of "A lynching? Who would try that in a majority black city?" and as people have mentioned here "That doesn't even happen anymore."

Unless these dimensional MAGA ninjas can be pulled back into the fabric of our reality, this isn't looking good for anyone involved. Chicago might be a democratic plantation, but that only goes so far. You ask people who've come from mostly poor backgrounds, and tend be pretty grounded in reality because of that, to start believing in fantastical tales of magic racists and they're going to tell you you're full of shit, at least where I came from.

It's like these people truly believe that every black person is either a twitter psycho or too stupid to know bullshit when they see it. And then they want to talk about their community. The same one you're using as outrage bait for your performance art piece? Shameless, that's the only term for it.

This whole story has stunk of bullshit from the first few minutes of details coming out and stinks more and more as time goes on. Some thoughts I had about all of this is(and sorry if it sounds autistic af):

First, if the noose was directly around his neck then that means they stripped his clothes partially at least to put it directly around his neck. Otherwise it was around his neck outside the coat/scarf/w.e he was wearing and he tampered with evidence. Native Chicagoans know how ass fucking cold it was and everyone was bundled up heavily, so why did they throw bleach onto his body? If anything, why didn't they pour it on his face/mouth if they got him on the ground long enough to strip his clothes partially to get a noose on him? It's literally the only exposed spot on his body and they brought bleach so they intended to use it for harm. Lastly, if he had bleach thrown on him then why isn't his clothing discolored, cause he's making it sound like they stripped him out of his winter gear and got it on his body, yet the wind chill was enough to give frostbite/hypothermia to skin within 15 mins and probably sooner with wet liquid on exposed skin. And if they did strip him of some clothes, they would have ran away with them and ditched them somewhere.

Again, sorry if it sounds autistic or said before but just kinda thoughts been racing around and connecting together and wanted to wait a few days for all the info before saying anything.

According to Jussie Smollet's neighbor the culprits were outside for at least 90 minutes before the attack. So where did they keep the bleach all that time:

What is the freezing point of bleach?

Yes, bleach does freeze. There are various concentrations of bleach, and each will respond at a different temperature.

The chlorine content of the bleach will determine at what point the bleach will freeze. If you are talking about a bottle of household bleach, then it will be around 18 or 19 degrees F. This will also depend on windchill if the bleach is outside of a protective structure. To be on the safe side, any long term cold below freezing will start to affect the bleach once you get in to the 18-20 degree range (Fahrenheit).

Between 12:30am and 2am on that Tuesday the temperature was between 5-10 degrees F, with a windchill of around 0 to -5 degrees F. Wind gusts were up to 30mph.

How large was the bottle of bleach? A smaller one would freeze quicker, right? If they weren't dressed to even keep themselves warm in that weather how were they supposed to keep a bottle of bleach warm?

Jussie Smollett is literally retarded. How can you plan a hoax and put almost no thought into it?!

I would honestly believe him getting his ass beat by some random hobo with a Cloroxcicle over 4th dimensional MAGANAZIs that cannot be seen by cameras.

Does Subway have one of those sassy meme twitters that all the fast food chains do these days?
I want something extolling the virtues of how durable their sandwiches clearly must be.

Look, it's one thing to beat, pour chemicals on and attempt to lynch a man, it's another thing altogether to steal his meatball sub. Taking his sandwich would have elevated this straight past hatecrime into war crime territory.
