'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

I think you may be on to something here. It's entirely possible he got his ass kicked by a hookup gone wrong or something, but considering the weather this past week, it's equally if not even more likely that he slipped and fell on the ice and saw an opportunity to make some headlines. A simple fall like that can break bones, even on a healthy young(ish) person, and it would certainly leave you coated in that weird chemical salt residue and the general grime of old Chicago snow.

Whatever happened, though, I think that sixty-second window is pretty damning. Sixty seconds to get gay-bashed, knocked down, noosed and bleached, and then be picking yourself up again and walking past that second camera? What's the distance between those two cameras, anyway? I agree, because this is how it always seems to go with these stories. The Muslim girl who filed a false report about being attacked and having her hijab ripped off - was she ever charged? Regardless the media dropped her story like a sack of bricks. No consequences, they just stop talking about it.

That's what makes me the most bitter about shit like this. Calling it out, parsing the real story from the bullshit...it doesn't matter. If the narrative is false the people who crafted it don't face repercussions so long as they're still on the side of the institutions that publish it. It'll continue to happen, and the only detriment they'll ever face is a temporary drop in funding necessitating the occasional round of layoffs. The people directing things continue to benefit, the populace remains both incredibly divided and ignorant, and there is. No. Solution.

‘Empire’ Creator Lee Daniels, Jussie Smollett Received Death Threats for Drama’s Gay Storyline

“Empire” co-creator and executive producer Lee Daniels said he and show star Jussie Smollett have received death threats for their depiction of a homosexual African-American male in hip-hop.

Daniels made the startling revelation Sunday at the 2015 Produced By Conference in Los Angeles, where he was joined by the Fox series’ producing team.

“I have to relate to these people honestly,” Daniels said of the show’s diverse audience, “that trash can scene? It happened.”

Daniels was referring to a flashback in the first season where Terrence Howard’s Lucious Lyon throws his young son Jamal (played as an adult by Smollett) into the garbage for donning his mother’s clothing and acting effeminate.

“Homophobia is real. It exists… Jussie and I both get death threats. But we will continue to do our thing,” Daniels said to applause from conference attendees on the Paramount Pictures lot.

There is a Walgreens that he might have passed on the way to Subway. It's situated between Subway and the area where the hoax occurred, just outside of the Loews hotel he was staying at.

Me, as a Non-US-Citizen, am a bit scratching my head over this Anti-Lynching-Bill?! Why should there be an Anti-Lynching-Bill? Last I have heard is, that killing someone is still very, very illegal. Or does it become legal, when 3-5 or more people gather with some torchers, hay forks and clubs and go on a merry lynching spree?

Could maybe one of the US-Kiwis enlighten me a bit on this?

A hundred years ago, this would have been a useful law (and it was originally proposed a century ago) because, at the height of lynching in the U.S., few white people in the South were held accountable for violent crime against black people. Southern law enforcement was racist as fuck, and they were always going to protect their friends, and themselves, from prosecution for crimes against black people. Even when such cases made it to court, all-white juries would never fail to acquit. There was a big change during the civil rights era when the feds finally gave themselves the authority to bypass local law enforcement when necessary. But the laws that let them prosecute hate crimes as a violation of minorities’ civil rights are still on the books, so this lynching law is legally unnecessary, and it’s also unnecessary since lynchings don’t really happen anymore.

I’m not even sure if I’ve ever seen a report of a noose being hung somewhere just as a threat where it wasn’t ultimately proven to be a hoax. It seems like SJWs are more obsessed with nooses and lynchings than racists are.
