'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

What are the possibilities that Jussie, in his hubris, reveals he was blackmailing the brothers into either sex or staging the attack? If the brothers were dealing drugs, it would be very easy to do. Just threaten to report so the feds will deport them. Hopefully he'd get charged with that as well.

There's something tragically clownworld about a rich gay celebrity using blackmail about homosexuality against poor immigrants to commit a crime in the name of social justice and stopping homophobia.

The brothers are basically there to just validate all the hard evidence they have:
* why did Jussie delete the messages and conversations with the brothers that basically said "where are you, are you ready?" just before the "attack".
Remember how when the police finally got access to the phone they compared to the messages that were on the phone with the messages that they got from the phone network. And Jussie had deleted the messages to the brothers.
* the rehersal where jussie even points to the security camera he wants to record the "attack" the day before. That is video evidence they have shown.
* the video that they created where they even recorded the rehersal themselves. How do you explain that away to a jury?

Is his theory that when the jurors sit and discuss they will go "well, the messages and the video recordings are one thing, but what if they lied about having sex?" That won't work, it is irrelevant.

Even if you think that the brothers are lying, it makes no difference at all. They have video evidence of all that happened and message logs.
I just baffels me why he thinks saying that the brothers are gay would help?

But it seems his testify was golden:
* he is such a narc he wastes time testifying talking how great an actor he is and what a great show it was instead of trying to defend himself.
* he throws Fag Lemon under the bus
* and he goes into great detail on how gay sex in bath houses work

I think he knows he will be found guilty but he is setting up the emotional narrative of "yet another innocent black victim of oppressive justice system wrongfully sentenced and this is why we need justice reform". It might be his only choice at this point to try to salvage something.
And then he will transform into Kapernick v2 being the face of black men oppressed by a racist criminal system. Because his acting career is permanently destroyed. This might be his only remaining option going forward.

I really wish this trial was being broadcast. Between the defense attorney trying to accuse the judge of lunging at her to force a mistrial, Bussie detailing his bathhouse adventures, the prosecutor reading his own gamer words aloud there's so much unmined gold here.

The one thing Jussie could have done that would have sold me on his story was actually get hurt, because anybody that goes out in -27 degree weather to kick somebody's ass is putting them in the hospital with at least some busted ribs.

The thing I giggle about everytime I think about it, is how he was still wearing his noose when the police came to the apartment. That is some of the funniest shit I have ever heard.

Defense is going through their closing arguments right now. The prosecution seems to have done a pretty good job on their closing argument so this should be an easy deliberation for the jury.

One of the Osundairo brothers actually testified to exactly that. Jussie told them to "pull their punches" because he didn't want them to hurt him too badly.
