'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

One of the actually tony parts of Chicago, from what I understand. Not the sort of place you'd expect to see 2 rednecks wandering around with bleach and twine at 2 PM in pleasant early summer weather.
 
Closing arguments have concluded, jury is receiving their instructions. Judge Linn has kept the jurors as late as 8PM before during this trial so it's not out of the realm of possibility we have a verdict today.

BLM has put out a statement defending Smollett. Not sure this was the best time, guys.

As abolitionists, we approach situations of injustice with love and align ourselves with our community. Because we got us. So let’s be clear: we love everybody in our community. It’s not about a trial or a verdict decided in a white supremacist charade, it’s about how we treat our community when corrupt systems are working to devalue their lives. In an abolitionist society, this trial would not be taking place, and our communities would not have to fight and suffer to prove our worth. Instead, we find ourselves, once again, being forced to put our lives and our value in the hands of judges and juries operating in a system that is designed to oppress us, while continuing to face a corrupt and violent police department, which has proven time and again to have no respect for our lives.

In our commitment to abolition, we can never believe police, especially the Chicago Police Department (CPD) over Jussie Smollett, a Black man who has been courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom. While policing at-large is an irredeemable institution, CPD is notorious for its long and deep history of corruption, racism, and brutality. From the murders of Fred Hampton and Mark Clark, to the Burge tortures, to the murder of Laquan McDonald and subsequent cover-up, to the hundreds of others killed by Chicago police over the years and the thousands who survived abuse, Chicago police consistently demonstrate that they are among the worst of the worst. Police lie and Chicago police lie especially.

Black Lives Matter will continue to work towards the abolition of police and every unjust system. We will continue to love and protect one another, and wrap our arms around those who do the work to usher in Black freedom and, by extension, freedom for everyone else.

This just boils down to 'we don't like you so we won't even apply the broken clock principle no matter how egregious, we will always double down'. So why should I ever listen to BLM the few times they find an actual case of unjustified brutality out of a mountain of good boys on their way to college?

God no, look up the map in the OP. The Magnificent Mile, Water Tower Place, and Millennium Park are all within walking distance of the spot, along with several consulates (if memory serves.) This is one theory as to why the cops looked really hard at the story from the beginning: that's the one part of Chicago that people actually want to visit, so it's THE tourist hub. You can't let a story circulate that you'll get randomly attacked by Klansman in that part of the city even if it's true, not without tarnishing what little good reputation the city had left.

Right up until you saw the price tag on pretty much anything.

The funny thing is, this hoax would have been incredibly easy to pull off. The southern part of the state is pretty damn redneck, if he'd headed down to Smithville he would have gotten the same instant credulity as Jackie Coakley.

Fair enough on the price tag. But come on, Smollett never would have been found dead in that part of Illinois, mostly because given his unwarranted sense of self-importance he probably thinks the people there would lynch him on the spot for being that niggerfaggot from Empire.

Problem with that is it would require him to find an area there with a camera, which would mean driving around that area to plan, and also then having a plausible reason for popping down there at 2am. Somehow I suspect "I wanted a Subway" would result in some doubt for a trip that far.

I know, the more likely explanation is Smollett was lazy than that he thought it through, but there is a possibility someone involved realised the error in doing that.

He did think out the camera part though not very far. He picked out the spot for the Nigerian brothers because there was a camera there but apparently didn't realize they weren't facing him during the 'attack' and was quite upset to learn that during the investigation.

Funny you should say that. According to the Early Life section:

'Smollett is biracial.[9] His mother is African-American and his father is Jewish.[10] He has said that his father would "kill you if you called him white". His father was absent from his life for a significant portion of his childhood.[11]'

Daddy Smolhatt obviously didn't stick around long enough to teach little Bussie the advanced Jewjitsu techniques.

I recalled the camera bit and am torn. On the one hand I think the footage would have been hilarious when it was established that it was fake so I regret us not getting it.
On the other hand that even inanimate objects failed Smollett during this is great.
 
Verdict's apparently been reached already, not been read yet. Here we go....
