'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Best part is the Osundairo brothers are a couple of straight-up Nigerians. Scamming a guy like Smollet into getting paid and then flipping is second nature, and Smollet probably sends money to those poor Nigerian princes every e-mail.

Even if he is found guilty go look at the internet after the Rittenhouse verdict. The amount of people who just sulked and refused to accept it because it's not their outcome shows that there are plenty that will ignore Smollett's guilt as long as he continues to deny it. Admitting he faked it would burn up the few believers he still has and those still willing to give someone they know deep down is lying credit.

Doubt it. Kyle Rittenhouse is a major symbolic blow to Antifa's ability to smash things up with no reprisal, their ability to take legal revenge if someone does, and even their moral standing; "Don't help the nazis, help the pedos!" is a pretty poor rallying cry.

While some people cannot backtrack on Kenosha due to sunk cost fallacy and political reasons, with Smollett they can shrug their shoulders and say they were just reporting what was claimed at the time.

Plus, Smollett's story is objectively funny: a gay, d-list black section actor fakes a hate crime against himself at 2 am using pitch-black straight Nigerians, that he's sexually exploiting on the side, dressed as white rednecks, carrying a noose made of laundry line, and a cup of bleach (which sounds suggestive for the first 10 seconds but not once you finish processing it in your head), in the middle of a Chicago -20 arctic cold blast, with the alibi that he just had to get a 6 inch Italian sub at 2 am, and they (the racist MAGA rednecks) attacked him because they recognized him off a black-targeted hip hop show. The plan went badly, at stage 3, when the police took it seriously and caught the perpetrators in rather quick order. Jussie's perps. This wasn't how it was supposed to go! Well, rather than abandon the plan, even when told "we'll get you out of this mess", an option he never planned for but was handed to him on a golden platter? He stubbornly and stupidly thought "No, that wasn't the plan! I won't get my roles and profit! I'm going to do it the way I said and it'll work fine! On to stage 4, 5, and most importantly, 6!"

There are so-called "Son of Sam" laws in most states that prohibit a criminal from profiting from their crimes, such as by writing books about them, but the stronger forms of such laws have been struck down as unconstitutional. Illinois currently has such a law replacing one they repealed to comply with Supreme Court case law.

Defense called its fourth witness on Monday in Jussie Smollett’s trial and it was not the actor himself.
Instead, Anthony Moore was called to testify on the former “Empire” actor’s behalf. Moore worked as a security guard for the Sheridan Hotel in downtown Chicago, located right near where the alleged attack happened.
On that night, he testified that he witnessed two men run past him, shining his flashlight in the face of the first. Moore described the man who he shined a light on as being a White man dressed in all-black with a ski-mask on. After that person ran past him, he witnessed another, shorter man run past but seemingly did not get a good look at him.
Despite Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, who alleged they were tasked by Smollett with carrying out the attack, being Black men from Nigeria, Moore was adamant that one of the people he saw that night was a White man. He also described seeing another person on the ground on all fours in the direction that the two men were running away from. Presumably, this was Smollett.
If there truly was a person besides the Osundairo brothers there that night, it would run counter to both their story and the story that has been accepted by Chicago Police and the prosecution. It would also be in keeping with Smollett’s original statement that White men jumped him, yelled racist and homophobic slurs at him and appeared to show their support for then-President Donald Trump.
However, Moore states that when he gave a statement to Special Prosecutor Dan Webb in his office on Jan. 9, 2020, someone else wrote it out while he spoke. The statement made no mention of a White man but Moore says he made it clear that’s what he saw.

Juries can be stupid. If someone is willing to claim they managed to identify a ski mask wearing person they saw in an instant in the light of a flashlight as white but somehow could not identify the ethnicity of the other that might still be enough for some people.
