There's a bunch of old state department travel memoirs that talk about going to Albania in the 50's. Apparently they made everyone take off their shoes and socks and wade through a trench full of green liquid. Also, their version of the Dear leader had all the charm of Brezhnev and the economic goals of Pol Pot.

These are so idiotically over the top I can't help but giggle, even at the ones that are advocating horrible things. Were there recordings/screen shots/etc. of this level of nuttiness from the fundies? I mean they make Chick Tracts seem less psychotic

I used to browse this site when I was in my Muslim days. Needless to say, this site also got me out of Islam. These people are batty as shit and more than likely are new converts. New converts to any religion tend to be a bit more overzealous and extremist.

Normally I'd agree, but I'm pretty sure most (if not all) of the writers of IslamQA are Saudis or other Gulf Arabs. They've probably been indoctrinated into Wahhabism since childhood. The translators (IslamQA fatwas are originally published in Arabic and then translated into other languages) may be new converts, but the original writers aren't.

That being said, I'm really interested in hearing your story. How did you become a Muslim, and how did you stumble across IslamQA? How long did it take for you to peace out of Islam after you started reading the site?

Well, actually I was Muslim twice- once in 2002-2003 and my interest sparked after the events of 9 /11. My research into Islam was trying to understand terrorism but I grew fond of the religion and wanted to convert. I converted online on my birthday but by spring of 2003 I lost interest. I don't remember if IslamQA was around but I know I was on similar Islamic forums, especially one designed for Muslim women.

I reconverted in 2011 and practiced until 2014 and stopped when my mom died because I went through a spiritual crisis. I was either a member or I lurked IslamQA, mainly I wanted to know about mental illness/developmental disorders and prayers. I never really got a concise answer and I was more confused. Then reading all of the stuff that is "haram" like music, art, etc had me questioning if I wanted to be in such a restrictive religion. I read about the things about dogs, about flatulence during prayer, menstruating women. All kinds of things. Eventually, it discouraged me and had me questioning why God would be so fucking OCD about all of this stuff and that is how Islam comes across to me, a religion that seems to have OCD among other things and I just can't follow the restrictive, often contradictory, rules to follow. I do like the concepts of modesty and hijab though.

I must also let you know I was exposed to Islam in 7th grade and I also had a Muslim in 9th grade and I was fascinated with it but my mom wouldn't let me visit the mosque. After I converted the first time after 9/11 she gave me a lot of hell.

Now, if that's not a huge selling point for a religion like Islam:
"A religion so savage and basic, even monkies can follow it!"
Maybe they should put this slogan on the Quran to improve their sales.

So, your opinion towards their rulings on apostates?

Why is every single muslim clerk up there so ugly, seedy, or both? Cousin-marriage over centuries.

What is the ruling on shaving a man’s chest?. said:
Praise be to Allaah.

Hair is of three types:

1 – That which sharee’ah commands us to leave alone and forbids us to remove any of it.

2 – That which sharee’ah commands us to remove.

3 – That concerning which sharee’ah says nothing; it does not tell us to remove it or forbid us to do so.

That which sharee’ah commands us to leave alone is the beard and eyebrows, from which nothing should be removed.

That which we are commanded to remove is armpit hair and pubic hair, and the moustache in the case of men.

That concerning which sharee’ah says nothing is forgivable (and is the matter of personal choice), because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “What is halaal is that which Allaah has permitted in His Book, and what is haraam is that which Allaah has forbidden in His Book, and what He has remained silent about is forgivable.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1726; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi.

That includes hair in the nose, on the chest, and on the legs and arms.

See question no. 9037.

It says in al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah (18/100):

With regard to shaving body hair in the case of a man, it is permissible according to the Maalikis, and it was said that it is Sunnah. What is meant by the body is everything except the head.

With regard to shaving the head, we have discussed the ruling on that in detail in the answer to question no. 14051.

And Allaah knows best.

So, you're not allowed to have a moustache, yet should keep the monobrow and you are allowed to shave your legs :story:

That's one of the biggest strikes against Islam, imo (aside from, well, everything else detailed in this thread). Yes, all organized religions have rules, but Islam is by far the most restrictive and, well, mechanical is the best word I can think of. I just don't get the impression that Islam promotes developing a personal relationship with God. You're just supposed to mechanically perform the same prayers and rituals as everyone else, and you'll be punished if you don't. Even if all of the controversial aspects of Islam didn't exist, I would never convert to it just because of all of the fucking rules. Even just "praying five times a day is obligatory" is a deal-breaker for me.

Also, I just really dislike the Islamic concept of God. Allah seems to be distant and wrathful figure who needs to be appeased. In fact, a lot of Muslims (not all, but a lot of them) view themselves as slaves to Allah (to the point where "Abdullah," which literally means "slave of Allah," is one of the most common Muslim names). Islam itself means "submission," as Muslims are meant to completely submit to Allah. Also, Islam basically teaches that Allah only has love and mercy for Muslims, and hates disbelievers. On the other hand, Christianity portrays God as a loving father who will always forgive and look after his children no matter what they do wrong. The Parable of the Prodigal Son is one of my favorite scriptures for this reason.

Anyway, here's part 5 of the Memri TV dump.

So, your opinion towards their rulings on apostates?

I think it's wrong, really wrong. I feel that everyone should have the freedom to believe what they want to and be able to leave a church or group without punishment from the followers. This is also the reason I hate Scientology. I know that in Islam they kill apostates and that keeps people in fear. I don't think God wants that.
