While I'll agree with you that Chris hasn't matured in the way you describe, I'll contend that
@KatsuKitty is correct in pointing out in that he has improved in the ares specifically mentioned above.
Yes, it's very likely that people are being nice to Chris because they're being understanding, tolerant, and not wanting to be mean to the exceptional individual, but it doesn't change the fact that Chris has improved with respect to his confidence and social anxiety issues. The old Chris was a lot more isolated and suspicious/fearful of people he didn't know.
As far as the people at Impulse being 'real' friends, I'm just going to say that they're a lot more real than some of the friends he's had in the past. A lot of people have 'causal' friends who they may see at the bar or certain events but aren't really involved with them beyond that. This isn't unusual.
Chris also seems a lot happier. It's been a while since he ranted about Snyder, Megan, the gal pals - even the blarms. It's also nice that he's finally standing up to Barb.
The real test will be to see how Chris functions when he's in a less comfortable/accommodating space (such as Impulse or a con) where his behavior is more likely to be accepted/tolerated. How will he react if someone calls him out for acting inappropriately? This remains to be seen.
