I honestly don't think he'll ever change.

I'm no expert, but I feel like someone has to want to change before they ever can, and based off what I've seen of Chris since 2007, he doesn't really want to change.

Maybe he'll never be able to see past his problems, but I think that if he honestly sat down and accepted real life help, he could change. I'm just not too convinced he'll ever reach that point.

Its really just an example. The point is, Chris is even though hes making money and socializing, hes still far from doing well. Just better than what he was before.
Actually, I'd argue that he's very close to doing well because he's too ignorant to differentiate / has different goals in life than most, to the point where he hits all of the main points of "doing well".

He's got almost everything he needs or wants, and he (believes) he has a clear path to acquiring the things he doesn't already have. (Mostly a girlfriend.)

By most metrics, that's doing well.

He'd still come up with a rationalization for why straight women are supposed to want him.

Well obviously college experimentation would cover this issue. Many a straight woman and gay man seek out the allure of China while attempting to achieve higher educational pursuits than the "honor roll" (supposedly anyway.)

Although in saying that I'm not sure as to how far "experimentation" could stretch before it becomes less a pursuit of fresh, exciting experiences and more of a nightmare. There is probably somebody out there for him but at least for me he'd need several improvements before I'd consider him more than a friend and I'd probably need to turn into a woman to take his fancy (which I guess is a good thing.) I guess this logic may also apply to other people who could show some interest in him on a romantic/sexual level.

I think that to say, definitively, that Chris is doing well (by his standards, which is all that matters, really) he would need to have a sweetheart. But as long as he has hope that he can get a sweetheart, he can at least be happy, which is better than where he was a couple of years ago.

Deep in credit card debt. More delusional than ever. Zero chance to attain even the simplest of goals. Yeah, Chris-Tran is doing just dandy.

Actually, that's probably why he's happy. Consider if Chris were to suddenly become sane. He'd have no friends, a trash pile for a house, a mother who's essentially furniture, a criminal record and a strange internet cult documenting his every action. Chris has his own little bubble which he lives in. He's got a home, adoring fans, lesbian friends, stuff he never had growing up.

Whilst disruptive to society at times, Chris is probably happier than he's ever been. Both him and Barb could probably do with some severe psychiatric help, but I think Chris would be happy to continue as he is for the rest of his life.

Of course he's doing better. Chris is tribbing on a new lesbian at his leisure like they come from a pack of gum. He's made millions off his Sonichu merchandise and even makes Dr. Dre look like a bitch. I even heard Gene Simmons talks shit about him in jealous spite. Donald Trump recently described his business acumen as that of a "straight killer". He's giving singing lessons to both Maynard James Keenan and Drake. Kate Upton sends him nudes daily.... not just boring nude selfies, kinky shit with toys in the wrong hole.

His media empire stands to acquire not only Sega, but also Nintendo by the end of the 4th quarter. His biggest financial problem is numbers don't go as high as his stacks do. The Louvre has replaced it's entire collection with his original works of art, as all other paintings and sculptures are now considered "valueless". Disney and Warner Bros have scrapped their upcoming Marvel and DC superhero movies, realizing their futility up against the future Sonichu Cinematic Universe. His willpower has become so strong that he was able to mentally cure himself of autism through shear mental resolve and strength of character. Not only that but he has transcended simply human limitations of thought and based wants. He has become the One who was foretold. When the Aliens arrive on earth, they will acknowledge Chris as head leadership of humanity.

Also he probably shits his pants half as often these days, so yea I'd say he's doing better.

You've summed it up pretty well there. In short, Chris is "happy" because he's oblivious. He'll continue to be "happy" until circumstances force him to confront reality. Then he won't be "happy" so much as he'll be "hysterical."

Why do you use scare quotes around happy? Do you think he's not genuinely happy?

I think Chris might be content, but he'll never be completely satisfied at his current pace of doing things.

He's improved insofar as he doesn't make as much an ass of himself on the Internet as he did in 2010, but he's still mostly unchanged in any meaningful ways. At the very least, he has a small amount of income now that isn't a tugboat, which is significant I guess.

Chris is becoming more tolerable and she has a less terrible outlook on minority groups of any strata, but that doesn't mean she's anywhere near neurotypical or 'better'. It's more a case of moving sideways rather than forward. But at least it's not negative change.

Lots of people spend their money on things they'd enjoy now rather than things that might benefit them in the future. It's called hyperbolic discounting. Why single Chris out for it?

You're right, I concede that. There's nothing wrong with a focus on video games, or even legos, if you're far past the standard age demographic.

But Chris BLOWS his (load) budget all over video games and toys. He could put this money in an annuity, invest it wisely, or best yet, invest in himself through education. "Pour your purse into your head. That way, no one can take it away from you." - Ben Franklin

I don't think anyone at Chris' age is completely satisfied. Generally people are happy when they are pretty comfortable in their day-to-day lives, and they feel like they're moving forward towards their long term goals. Chris easily meets both of these standards.

Why at all would Chris want to educate himself? That's like judging a carpenter for not going to college. That's just obnoxious.

Of course not. Unless I'm severely under-estimating Chris' level of mental illness, even he has to realize his way of life is totally unsustainable. After all, if he were that level of psychotic, he wouldn't be able to function at all. His flailing attempts at garnering a replacement mommy are proof enough of that. I think it's safe to say that Fatty is aware, albeit through a glass dumbly, that he's far from being truly happy.

Pretty much all the problems of modern society are solvable if we assume that people are rational and make decisions in their own best interests.

Problem is that, in general, they aren't and they don't. Delayed gratification is a much harder sell than enjoying yourself now. Everything you mentioned would, rationally, be better for Chris than what he does at the moment, but it would require temporary hardship and he's not willing to go through that.

One look at the rise of diseases of consumption like type-2 diabetes will confirm that Chris is far from alone in his shortcomings.
