Just got done playing a hooky copy of First Light, as a kid I was a huge James Bond fanboy (To the point I collected the comics and even owned a ton of the trading cards, remember those? I do but barely anyone does) and since moving out I haven't really dabbled or fucked with James Bond stuff, it was a big "Family sit down and watch together" thing I found hard to replicate yknow?
Anyhow, exposition aside, I really enjoyed the game, it did feel like I was playing a James Bond movie and it was going back to the era of bond I loved (Sorry guys, I don't like the Craig era), I love the focus on whacky gadgets and a smug, smarmy bond who fucks and quips, it's goofy fun. It definitely has it's dramatic moments which I am fine with because it gave everything stakes and a sense of why James would be so hellbent on doing what he is as it felt personal to him, which was usually how they played it in some movies.
I think the cocktease with the Valhalla was annoying though, what a way to pull a Chekov's gun and have it be an absolute let down, I really was hoping for a high-speed action segment but with all the game had done up to that point it feels like critiquing a tasty and delicious cake because the icing wasn't my favorite colors. I think the focus around the Q-watch was a good idea and I hope they expand on it more going forward with more gadgets and a wider array of opportunities in missions.
I am also fucking glad that M/Moneypenny aren't the typical DIVERSE STRONG WOMAN stereotypes, I saw the initial outrage over the races and wasn't taken by it (I don't care as long as a character is written well) but I did have a fear that they'd both be "always right" and James would just be some blundering white man who gets girlbossed all day. Thank FUCK they didn't do that.
