So I got called up for jury duty on May 1.
When I got there, I found this sign on the door saying that all hearings had been postponed owing to weekend storms that had caused blackouts and problems with the telephones all over the area. I was to come back in two weeks.
I returned on the 15th, as per the instructions. There was a roll call and a brief jury orientation. After two hours we were released with instructions to call on the following Friday the number (redacted here) we were given to see when the court resumed.
We called. My next jury appointment comes up a week from Friday (Jun 2).
Yeah, it's hardly the O.J. trial or the Bill Cosby thing now going on over in Pittsburgh. Twelve Angry Men it ain't. It's not even a criminal case. It's a little civil slap-fight that may not even come to trial if the litigants decide to settle out-of-court first (which happened eight years ago the first time they called me up). I probably won't even get picked to serve. I could even wheedle out of it by citing hardship, or simply giving vague, noncommittal answers to any questions. Flus, either way I still get paid for showing up. Easiest seventeen bucks I can expect to make.
God bless America, eh?
