Even there, the intent requirement is to steal, not to break the law.
That's what I meant there - laws against theft are normally worded something like "a person commits theft if they knowingly control the property of another with the intent to deprive the owner of the property."

If he mistook the "diamond" for one he had lost, and picked it up and sold it, he'd be factually mistaken, but not legally guilty.

However, he knows it's a "diamond" he has no prior connection to and he knows it was on his mother's property. Any belief he could have that it "belongs" to him is because of a legal error, not a factual mistake, and would therefore be legally indefensible.

In all likelihood, any legal action about this dumb thing would just result in him having to give it back, though, unless a vindictive prosecutor really hated his guts, which might be the case. I mean, if you knew the guy, wouldn't you?

"And, uh, who's the defendant in the case?"

"My name's Jonathon Sweet, Your Honor, and I-"

"GAAH! Guilty!!"

I think that what Jon has found is the busted lens from one of the headlights of an old car.

The thing is, everyone thinks diamonds are worth money but they aren't. I used to work at a secondhand shop where people would proudly bring in their old jewelery, expecting to get a few hundred for their precious gem... we would weigh out the gold, pay them for that, and give the diamonds to the owners kids to play with.
I think there was only one diamond I saw that was worth anything on its own, and it was an exceptional example of the 4 Cs. I could go on for awhile about how diamonds are a huge scam but yeah.

When you're at the bottom of the food chain like Sweet is, you cling to whatever hope you can find, no matter how flimsy.

I believe I found that "dig yer own diamonds" place in Mufreesboro that Jon referred to. It's called the Crater of Diamonds state park, if anyone would like to check it out.

So lets say what he found was a diamond. He's going to use it to continue his operations (aka piss in bottles and do nothing) as opposed to move out or, even better, help his mom? I mean she's been supporting his ass for years and breathing in lord knows how much black mold. Maybe I just feel bad for her but stealing her diamond AND using it for stupid ass shit? That's cold.

He lost his forums, and the mean ol' liberal Kiwis have been ripping holes in his narrative for over two years now. This diamond thing is just another of his ways of coping with reality crashing down on him. Not thought through, just hopeful fantasy.

And that's why I wouldn't be shocked if he decided to refuse to get the "diamond" looked at, so he can still lie to himself that he isn't a titanic failure of a human being brought low by his own lack of initiative.

There's no way it's a diamond. It's almost impossible to tell from the PotatoCam 1.0 pics but best case scenario it's a quartz crystal worth maybe a few bucks to a rock hound or hippie.

The most likely scenario it's a chunk of an old glass headlight or headlight lens or possibly part of a broken CRT or maybe even part of some little girl's Disney princess halloween costume.

There are diamonds around there but only in very specific areas.

I'm calling it now. With everyone going "That's clearly not a diamond" Sweets will write something along the lines of "This is just THE OTHER FORUM trying to tell me everything I believe is a lie." Followed by something super racist.

He'll say agents of the progressive system snuck into his yard at night and planted a fake diamond to make him look foolish or some other shit.

That was me. I drew the short straw, so I had to sneak into the Mold Kingdom and plant the hunk of glass, some worthless old coins, and a fake skeleton. He'll no doubt unearth the coins and skeleton at some point and think he's uncovered a fortune, and Jimmy Hoffa, respectively.
