Hytale - Because the world needed another "Minecraft clone with RPG mechanics" game, apparently

Huh, what kind of hardware do you use for running a server, because I have a trashcan Mac Pro with a 12 core CPU and 64GB of dedotated DDR3 so if the overhead's not too bad I can install a linux distro on it and use it as a throw-in-a-corner kind of server for this.
I do it via a hosting service, since I do not have the knowledge of running my own server. They claim AMD Ryzen 9 7900 CPU's with fast NVMe storage. Can't find any info on what kind of detotaded WAM they're using. Theres a high chance they are ripping me off.

I've liked Hytale so far, but it is really barebones for obvious reasons. It does have a lot of QoL features that Minecraft should've added long ago, but they don't want to because that would require them to do work outside of Bedrock cashgrab slop. I'm surprised no one has talked about how Minecraft has had 10 years to compete with Hytale's trailer and the best that they could come up with is a worldgen that took away the sovl of the game and a bunch of biomes/mobs/items that no one asked for.

The combat feels limpdicked.
I have to disagree with this hard. I haven't played Minecraft properly in like half a decade so maybe they changed things, but from what I remember I found it a lot more boring than Hytale.

So far my favorite enemies in Hytale are the accursed giant frogs. The fuckers have a nasty tongue attack that catapults you like you're a scout in Deep Rock Galactic about to fall to your doom. You can block it, but if you don't, you can easily end up getting slung into a lava pool or down some crevasse, falling to your death. Happened to me many times.
There was also this cool scythe wielding undead guy doing some fancy moves, he wasn't very tough but I liked his style a lot.

I also like the different weapons so far. The sword has some lunge attack that thrusts you forward and you can use a shield with it. The two handed axe, well I haven't used that one much, it deals a lot of damage but it feels kind of slow for my liking; haven't used the mace yet at all; I'll have to play with those two some more.
The daggers on the other hand, they feel OP as can be. They're super fast and they don't do that much damage, but when you do a charged attack you do some massive leap attack. If you hit an enemy with it you deal massive damage and you also jump back after hitting them, offering amazing offensive and defensive capabilities at the same time. You can also use them for some sick platforming manoeuvres, like you can easily leap up a 4-6 block high platform to attack an enemy above.
It's also neat how you can charge up a special move by attacking with the same weapon repeatedly, and deal some massive damage with that.
The bow also seems kind of OP to me simply because enemies seem to not react to you hitting them if they're far enough away lol.

And speaking of movement, I like how you can mantle up height elevations easily, heck you can even sprint up 1 block height differences, it's great.

I also like how there seem to be a lot of ruined structures filled with enemies or loot that you can find around the world, both underground and above ground. Biomes look cooler than what I remember in Minecraft too, I'll have to post some screenshots at a later date.
But I could be wrong on this, as I said, I haven't played Minecraft in many years, maybe vanilla is better nowadays, or is that wishful thinking?

Edit: All that being said, it is very early accessy and barebones as GGSurvivor said. But they seem to be adding new stuff at a reasonable pace so I'm happy with it.

Very rarely am I hopeful for an early access game, because they either crash and burn entirely or they just get 1 year of mediocre support and then hit “release” as a mediocre, half-finished title. But I gotta say, I’m actually cautiously optimistic about Hytale.

As it stands right now, it’s very barebones. There isn’t much to do outside of upgrading all your equipment and workbenches. Completing the “memories” offers a sort of fun Pokédex style experience, but that’s not something I’d consider too important to overall experience. That said, there’s elements to this game that give me the feeling the devs truly were passionate about Minecraft, and grew frustrated with the continual silent treatment or outright refusal the community has been handed when asking for QoL features. I don’t blame them.

As far as building, for example - things like vertical slabs, roof blocks, and proper support beams should not have been something we needed an entirely new game to experience. Mojang is autistically obsessed with the “vision” they have for Minecraft’s building mechanics and art style, to the point where they’ve created an almost elitist mindset around the bullshit restrictions in place when it comes to building. Anyone saying they struggle to build something that looks good are met with “git gud, scrub. Do a mathematical theorem in order to figure out your pointed roof or GTFO.” As someone who does build good looking things in Minecraft and learned all the tricks surrounding depth and greebling and the like, I still hate how hard it is to build aesthetically pleasing shit - because when my friends join my worlds, they just shit it up with wooden boxes and goofy ass structures. Go watch a normie play Minecraft. What you’ll notice is 90% cannot build. In a building game. The additional blocks and tools in hytale, I think, will make it easier for shitters to build pleasing structures, and because I’m not an elitist about my virtual legos, I think that’s a good thing.

Mod support is also, at this very moment, far better than Minecraft’s. You don’t have to load specific installations of the game to join specific servers with specific mods. When you join a server with mods, you automatically shift to that release version of the game. This is going to get even MORE favor for hytale in the coming year, since mojang is now committed to updating the release version of Minecraft every few months, making the ability to keep mods relevant near impossible.

Overall, Minecraft is currently the better game. Of course it is, it’s had 17 years to build itself up. But I see serious potential in hytale to become a viable alternative in a way no other clone has. Unless the devs to the indie dev thing and fuck off with their money. (Fully possible.)

Well these are the guys behind Hypixel no? They've done quite a bit with those servers and have a MMO-lite already which I guess was partially a prototype for their ideas with Hytale.

Something that's been on my mind with Hytale as interest has ebbed has been the response from Minecraft content creators & Jeb. I don't have the sources on hand and don't really care to dig them up and archive them. Jeb's comment along the lines of "I play Hytale and I really just want to play Minecraft" is such a bitter loser statement. Of course you want to play the game you "have control" over and have worked on for fifteen years. Him and a lot of youtubers don't seem to understand that Hytale is new and Minecraft is old and therefore limitations are going to be there when comparing the two. I watched Fwhip's stream and he complained that the building blocks are rigid i.e you can't do as much gradients like in Minecraft, which I kind of agree with. However, clearly the aesthetics of Minecraft in terms of the actual game and within building have been optimized to shit. If you're a youtuber or want to make "cool" builds, you now have to use a gradient palette of 6-10 blocks, use cobblestone as logs (I hate this "innovation" thats popped up in the last few years and now all the sloptubers are doing it), and you better use Litematica or else you are going to drive yourself crazy trying to switch between the blocks yourself with all the bloat.

It's interesting that one of the original "Le Epic Minecraft Builders" sees the clear superiority in building (QoL tools) in Hytale:

Edit: And yeah, Hytale does have a lot of blocks/decoration choices, but I'd say from playing that most of them are QOL/different enough where it isn't Wood Type #10, and at least they have furniture where I don't have to use the same door-trapdoors-slab design from 12 years ago.

Holy fuck, I had no idea creative mode in Hytale was so cool. I've been playing it since release but only playing the exploration mode. Not a big fan of just building stuff in creative mode, but watching the video, this looks really impressive.

Edit: Damn, the fact that you can just rotate and scale props in creative mode is just mindblowing to me haha.
