I honestly didn't know about this game until just now when now I know it's cancelled. The trailer looks awful. If you look carefully, you even see that nobody landed a single shot in that entire video. Not even joking, every single one is a miss.
I'm not going to comment on character backstories, the lootbox garbage, and the fact this comes off the heels of the devs abandoning their other projects because that really doesn't affect the gameplay. I obviously didn't play the beta, but from gameplay footage I can confidently say:
- The character silhouettes are complete trash and readability is awful. Everyone and everything from the environment, to enemies, to other players are fighting for visual attention. This is Bad Game Design®.
- Zero G is not a fun mechanic. It's only fun in games where you can break maps using it as a one-off goofball mode people can ignore. Nobody likes looking up in a first person shooter, and the pacing of your game takes a massive dump because the movement is now floaty and you have no tactical benefit to being a slow, floating target with no cover. This is also Bad Game Design®.
- Zero G being bad compounds with the readability being bad because now you both don't know what you're looking at and don't know where anything is. This makes it Fractal Bad Game Design®.
- Every character is some skinnyfat shlub in neon fetish gear, the only difference is their head. There was nothing distinct about the characters besides "woman," "guy in mask," and "other woman."
- Because every character is some skinnyfat shlub in neon fetish gear, there's no way to tell what a character is capable of by looking at them. That would be okay in something like an arena shooter where players can be using anything and thus the weapons should have the most visually demanding designs, but this is a hero shooter, which means your abilities are tied to your character. Even Overwatch, which was a visual nightmare with characters having no unified design, at least made the tanky characters big or the healer characters scrawny.
- The guns are boring. I know you have to have gun archetypes in your fancy shooter, but maybe have something with an identity that matches the futuristic theme beyond "a bullpup with an L.E.D. light on it?"
- The objective of the game appears to be akin to capture the flag, which is generally a bad game mode because it rewards defensive play more than anything. A.K.A. the most boring playstyle. If you have no reason to move from their base because the objective is there and the other team has no reason to hold an area when the objective is behind enemy lines, you will either create an eternal stalemate if it's defense-favored or an unbalanced slaughter if it's offense-favored.
- There are grenades, movement-hindering mechanics, and bullet-blocking mechanics. Grenades can be fine if handled well, and it seems like they are because they're big and noisy in the trailer. But nobody, absolutely nobody likes having their movement slowed or their guns not work. When you remove control from the player, they see it as the game punishing them. When it's a major and integral gameplay mechanic, the players learn to hate the game. Overwatch had a character that blocked bullets and guess what? Everyone had to have him on the team, yet nobody liked playing as, with, or against him.
In short, if I saw this trailer before it got cancelled, I would actively want it to be cancelled. I can look past it trying to ape the hero shooter genre yet again. This game is bad in every possible aspect.
