So that stuff I was reading about it reaching Cat 5 and being worse because it's top-right quadrant was hitting directly and such incorrect then. This is a relief. Still surprised at how little I've seen on this though.

This is all CNN has talked about today and they are normally held up as the left leaning MSM. So I'm really not sure what your talking about? Do you mean your local news?

Hurricanes are just weird like that. Sometimes you just get a normal rain storm in the bands despite whatever category its on, or absolute chaos. That said, the right side being generally the worse side to be on is mostly true. North and the northeast sides are to ones to avoid getting hit on because of some stuff about the water and winds being stronger there in the spin than the west sides.
I wouldn't consider that its "not worse" now, we still have to wait for news of damages and deaths. Rescuers and police still can't get there because of how flooded it is and no final death count yet.
 
Fox has hardly been covering it. They are mostly covering Afghanistan’s but honestly that is expected from them.

As far as cable goes I have been watching The Weather Channel since they are actually showing stuff.

They're probably waiting for actual happenings. We can toss a football around and speculate, but news networks loose credibility if they hype something up and it turns out to be (read: they can't convince people it's not a) nothingburger.
 
One thing different about Ida from Katrina is that people did seem to take Ida seriously, maybe that helped with folk being prepared and taking precautions.
I remember in the lead-up to Katrina there were so many people rolling their eyes when told to evacuate. There had been too many tiny storms come through that were overhyped by the media and no one believed them anymore.

I did laugh a bit when someone on WWLTV spoke of looting being taken seriously. I mean, it's about time but...

You want something else to laugh at? Some guy in a press conference, I think working for the city, made the claim that "the best place to be in a disaster is New Orleans." I about lost my shit when I heard that, I can't think of a worse place to be in this country when shit hits the fan.

Cell service is spotty basically anywhere from Picayune, MS & Slidell, LA down south. Also everyone and their mother is driving north trying to find gas and bleeding gas stations dry along the way.

On my way back home today, I saw a massive amount of electric utility trucks going in that direction. They were in convoys of 3-5 trucks. I didn’t even recognize the names on them (I think one was Pike something).

germany has northsea coast too. the parts of the netherlands that are best known for dikes are very closely related with parts of north germany and there is also land claimed from the sea in germany. the real dike builder are frisian, not dutch, and they come from the coastal area from germany and the netherlands(they also speak a language closer related to english than to dutch or german).

In 2005, the levees failed. That was the primary cause of all the flooding. This year, they held. It's bad, but not Katrina-bad.

Ghetto dwellers do have fewer vehicles than suburbanites but New Orleans is not NYC or Boston, or Chicago, or even Philly. The metro population is smaller than Memphis or OKC, and the population of the city itself is "only" 380,000 in an area twice as large as Philly and four times the size of Boston. What I'm trying to say here is that it's actually a pretty small and sprawling city. If the residents actually wanted to evacuate and were warned on time (neither of which really happened), I'm sure most would get out OK.

I wish I was a lineman right now. Those rows of trucks are carrying every lineman from every company with the sense to jump on these emergency contracts down there right now. Like a $60/hr base rate and basically unlimited per diem overtime.
 
Update: So me and the family decided to say fuck it and drove to Houston where my second property is.

Luckily none of our stuff is flooded. It really boils down to having no electricity.

Getting gas is so bad you’d have to go to Baton Rouge to refill.
