Mine is a Sharp and it beeps five times to indicate the cooking time is done.

I think that's just excessive, especially since it also turns off when the cooking time is done. It's not like I have to run over and pull food out before it burns.

A lot of modern microwaves have a mute or at least a lower volume function if you check the user manual mine has two rapid quiet beeps.

I think the most common route is holding down the 1 or 0 button for a few seconds but some have more in depth processes.

Does it have a manual timer, like a dial that you twist?

I should have asked people to tell me their brand of microwave. I would like a microwave that doesn't make such a fuss about things. I'm not in the market for a new one any time soon, but I'm sure other people are.
Yeah, it's got a mechanical dial and not electronic keypad.

Some microwaves have a quiet mode. I've just found out mine can be turned on through holding one of the numbers.

My last one only beeped 3 times. The new one beeps 5 times, which is entirely too many.
They need to put this at least on the side of the box, if not the front. Everyone knows it has a "potato" button and a turntable; tell me how loud it's going to be so I can make an informed choice in five minutes in the aisle at the department store.

No joy, and no hint of anything like that in my manual. It does have a recipe for "omletts," which is a halfway spelling I'd never encountered before.
