Scream served a purpose. For better and worse. It came at a time when the major studios declared horror movies to be dead and considering how all of the major franchises were underperforming at that time it's hard not to see their point. Plus the design of Ghostface is cool. Getting the rights to that mask was championed by Craven. Harvey Weinstein wanted to use a more generic-looking mask partly so they wouldn't have to pay the mask company for licensing.
Interestingly enough you can see some of the reshoots (especially in the opening scene) where he is wearing the first mask which was basically 'Kinda like ghostface but different enough we won't get sued) in a few shots

I was a little kid when the first Scream came out and I remember in the 90's, those masks were everywhere around Halloween. They still kinda are, but I didn't realize until years later that the Ghostface mask predated the movie by several years.

It was actually a little bit surprising when I found this out.
Oh yeah before a thousand harry potters every kid in school had a ghostface mask more so after scream came out they made like a hundred variants to cash in on the popularity. From glow in the dark, to One that was filled with fake blood, it's no wonder to this day ghostface masks are often sold with the tagline "the father of Halloween." Man those were the days

I always love this bit of trivia. TLDR: Oprah wanted to do this passion project called Beloved which is a slavery drama since 1987. She finally does her pretentious little opus and it was released same weekend as Bride of Chucky and Bride came #1 in the box office that weekend. Which resulted in Oprah binge eating for 6 weeks straight because of "muh depression."

Based Chucky.

Is it even fair to call Fear Street a movie? I'm about halfway in right now, and holy shit.

It starts as a rip off of Scream, basically turns into a cliche high school movie for a while, segues into a rip off of Halloween 1 then Halloween 2, then they meet and it's literally a scene ripped-off from IT where a black kid exposes how 'every X number of year a killer comes and kills a bunch of kids' etc... also the lead is an annoying cunt. It rips off RL Stine, Goosebump, etc. etc.

Wtf. Why did so many people praise it? Does it get better? Are the sequels worth it?

edit:

Ok, fine, I'll admit that some of that gore is top notch. The fucking head rammed through a slicer was fantastic, and I really loved how they put her cake on her face in order to make it so the aftermath wouldn't be so gross and all of the gore would mostly be hidden by the cake instead of being extremely graphic. I thought that was a really clever design choice.

Those of you who are horror fans might consider grabbing the documentary 'In Search Of Darkness'. It's a four-hour dive into 80's horror and how things came to be. Lots of interesting discussion and commentary, from John Carpenter to James Rolfe to Heather Langenkamp. Neat stuff.

Can we bring up creepy parts in films that aren't necessarily horror?

It looks pretty gay. Reminded me a lot of American Horror Story.

Nah, AHS doesn't try to play it straight, it's campy and meant to be campy. It's also plenty original, even if they base themselves on 'themes' or whatever that are not. It's also batshit, some seasons were shit because of how much they tried to experiment or tried to do things that were different, but them being original was never a problem.

Fear Street is just a bunch of millenials who sat in a room, were presented a bunch of movies that an algorithm presented them and they just did basically colored in whatever needed to be colored in. It's shocking how cliched it is. 50% of it is literally just MEMBAH THE 90S? I MEMBAH THE 90S. bullshit

I actually like Fear Street movies. My favorites are the Sequels. But I don't hate anyone who doesn't like the movies. Different taste you know.

I turned off the sequel about 5 minutes into it when they arrive at Britta's house and they are like 'U HAVE TO HELP US PLZ' and she's like 'NO NO NO GO AWAY' then they are like 'plzzzzz' and she's like 'wtf no leave' and the girl goes like 'but shes my girlfriend and i love her' and then Britta goes 'aw ok then'

Not only is that one of the most bullshit cliche whatsoever, if you've been terrified of something for 20 years, why would the fact that the girl asking help for her friend is in fact asking for help for her girlfriend change your mind? If you were fine turning her down when you thought it was her friend and was fine with her dying because you are worried for your own safety, why would the fact that it turns out she munches on her puss once in a while make you go 'Oh well I guess I'll endanger myself now'?

That's shit tier writing.

Anyway thanks to you saying the sequels are better I'm gonna give it another shot tonight but if it's terrible I'm gonna fuck you up nigga

I saw most of the slasher season, the 1984 one, and it was awful. It had some good gore and moments but it was awful. AHS is fucking garbage.

Fear Street 2 is better, as in 1st is a 2/10, that one is a 3/10, 3rd one is a 2/10 again.

Movies feel like they are made for Disney channel movies, just every now and then has a swear word or some gore that really doesn't gel with the tone of everything else. Also, the lead of the series is the most unlikeable bitch I've seen in a horror movie, she comes across as downright abusive to her ex, who legit did nothing wrong, yet the movie acts like she is a saint.

I love how the kid goes "The Konami Code always gives you power!" or some such thing in the 3rd part of Fear Street. There are games like Gradius III and the Parodius series that if you enter the code like that, you die! I just take my autistic Vidya Game knowledge seriously, I guess. I did like seeing Castlevania: Bloodlines being played on the 1st part and the 2nd part did have some fun kills.

Stuff like that takes me out of movies, not because of what you said, but because no one in real life talks like that, at least no one you would want to see survive a slasher movie.

On that note: reminder that one of the greatest Friday the 13th characters is Jewboy Shelly from part 3.

I heard that @Y2K Baby heavily identifies with this character.

I thought that was everything now? I go anywhere, click "Horror", start scrolling down and what do I see: retro throwbacks, remakes, killer clowns, stuff with references to social media in the title, and arthouse movies where it turns out that transphobia was the real monster all along. And then I go watch a Spanish werewolf movie from the 1970s or something.

Paul Naschy? I respect Naschy but never got into his many werewolf movies. But I do enjoy this one:

Some good gore and tons of nudity even if the twist is lame.

Yeah I genuinely can't stand that cunt. Even the lead in 2, back in 1978, was a stuck up cunt but at least she had somewhat of a good side. The overall lead is just a fucking monster.

It's actually much much worse in Fear Street, 1 is an absolute rip-off of the movies I mentioned earlier, 3/4 into Fear Street 2 and it's basically a Friday the 13th straight up rip-off, the lack of originality in those movies is breathtaking. It's basically Friday the 13th if you replaced the cast with teenagers from the Stranger Things universe. And I'm talking Stranger Things, like, Season 3

I have found some new enjoyment for Paul Naschy movies watching them on BluRay instead of godawful cheap transfers. They at least look nice. He seems to get billed as "the Spanish Lon Chaney" but he gives me more of a William Shatner vibe.

You're evidently not able to make it through these things in one sitting, but you make it there eventually. If so, know that feel.

There's also that point where I start scanning ahead to see if anything's ever going to happen, then decide "welp I already spoiled the movie, no point finishing now..."

I won't lie I like most of the characters except the main character. Who just comes off as a bitch who in the first movie harasses her ex-girlfriend
