I think in general the term "Media literacy" is a blight upon the earth itself, but then I come across shit like this:

https://old.reddit.com/r/Letterboxd/comments/1ft2ddh/the_substance_is_a_terrible_film/

Filled with literal mouthbreathing mongrels that make reconsider how intelligent the average person is. Here you have a thread with about 600 people in it, all of which dislike the substance because "how did she get an id", "why does she get the substance for free" and worst of all "why does she keep taking the substance if sue is the one having fun":

Look I'm not a substance fanboy ok? There are plenty of reasons to criticise the film, ending being tonaly wack, the mixed messages about exploitation, the narcissist protagonist, etc, but that thread is filled with the biggest mouthbreathers in existence that intentionally come up with the dumbest fucking criticisms a human could come up with.

There's this rumor going around that netflix intentionally makes their movies as dumbed down as possible and overexplains absolutely everything because they're meant to be second screen vieweing.

This thread is proof they're not. This is the target audience for these films.

People who need absolutely fucking EVERYTHING spoonfed to them or else they get confused and angry.

That thread is filled with so many bad takes that I had to double check to ensure its not a satire subreddit. Again its perfectly fine to hate the substance but holy shit put up a real criticism of it wtf.

Nitpicking films because they're not following real world logic needs to die. I don't care how the younger copy got an ID, I don't care how she got a job, I don't care how Jason lived in the woods for years with his mom's head and grew in to a giant man when he drowned as a kid, I don't care that Freddy's burns don't look real, I don't care that Darkman shouldn't be able to talk without lips, if the movie sets up it's rules well and that's that I DON'T CARE ABOUT HOW THIS WOULD WORK IN THE REAL WORLD!!

Husband and I have been watching older movies and TV shows for our nightly TV time and it's just so much more enjoyable. I don't need to see every move a character makes, that gets in the way of the story. Are these window lickers so dumb that they can't put two and two together and think "HMMMM.... Maybe she got a fake ID, HMMM... Maybe he's just an ugly dream demon that want's to kill our kids", but no these fucking brain rotted troglodytes need EVERY LITTLE THING spelled out for them because they never grew out of the faze where they're still amazed by a game of Peek a Boo.

OMG WE SAW HIM DRIVING BUT WE DIDN'T SEE HIM PARK!! HOW DID HE GET IN TO THE BUILDING!! I MUST KNOW FOR THE WIKI!!!

I blame Neil Degrasse Tyson, I know he's not the only one, but he was loud about it.

This is what novelizations used to be for, a different way of telling the story of a movie with more room for extra lore. Back in the day it seemed like every movie had a novelization but people can't read for long these days without losing their minds so the novelizations of films all but disappeared.

I've read a few and they can be so funny, because some of the novels are based on earlier drafts of the scrip. I wish I had kept those books.

Edit:

Hell yeah!

Jordan Peele's US would have been a better movie if they didn't explain shit, because once you try and it makes no sense is when it falls apart. You ask questions you wouldn't have if they didn't even try to explain anything in the first place.

Also find horror ips worse entries are normally the ones were they to explain the backstory and lore, such as Jason Goes to Hell.

comics too
iirc Trek V's comic has the rock monsters

I have a novelization of Phase IV (the ant movie). I was hoping to find out the opening narration was added in post, which would make a lot of sense, but it's in the book, AND the book is about an ant scheme that has FIVE phases, indicating it's probably still based on an early draft
