Cabin Fever was awful.
Both the original and the remake. I hate it when a movie is full of assholes. Yeah yeah the whole "let's laugh as the asshole gets brutally murdered" is funny, but not when every character is like that.

And that stupid bitch kept shaving her legs. What the fuck did she think would happen. Fun idea but damn.

Has anyone watched those dumb internet-based horror movies? (do they technically count as horror?) Some examples include Chain Letter (which was already years late to the trend when it released in 2010, and when did chain letters dies out as a trend again?), both Unfriended movies, and Friend Request. I have an odd fascination with Chain Letter, because of how they portrayed the computer scenes incorrectly, i.e. that nerdy kid playing World of Warcraft and saying that he's gonna take someone else's XP in-game, even though that isn't a game mechanic in WoW, and when he deletes a second chain letter that's sent to him, the screen is in Windows Photo Viewer. Battlefield 2142's opening movie also appears in one of the gaming scenes for some reason.

back in the day my Rocky Horror cast would watch a movie together after rehearsals each week, usually cult movies of one stripe or another
one time we watched Dee Snider's Strangeland, which was really amazing to have a collection of computer nerds, bdsm enthusiasts, and horror fans so we were able to completely and thoroughly shit on every single moment of the movie

I watched Braid (2019), and, in retrospect, I'm not really sure how I made it through it. It's from some nepo-baby who is a "unique voice in feminist horror," exactly like all the other unique voices in feminist horror. And I mean EXACTLY like.

Every female character is immediately unlikeable - gross, criminal, entitled, (literally) slutty, obliviously stupid. Every male character (well, both of them) is either lasciviously criminal, or utterly retarded.

Now, I will grant that in this particular movie, there's actually a good reason for that. BUT, by the time you find out why that is, you are beyond giving a shit (honestly the only reason I didn't quit on it was because I am lazy, and didn't feel like looking for something else to watch). Also, the "twist/revelation" that reveals why it is that way is so lame and milquetoast that, while it does explain things, it's just so dumb that it might as well not.

The "horror" aspects are just tepid and lame that I'm really not sure why it's not rated PG. I guess it tries to build some kind of atmosphere, but that is also a very feeble attempt.

The premise is that two chicks lose all their drugs and drug money, so they go to their crazy old friend's house to stay for a few days so they can rob her safe. The catch is they have to play house with the crazy girl in order to stay. And she winds up torturing them, or making them toeture each other. But the torture is so lame that it barely qualifies, and you already hate everyone, so the wacky-ness and originality of the torture are the only reason to watch, and it sucks.

It's boring when it's not being nonsensical. Again, the dumb twist at the end makes it so that, if the movie were actually decent, the nonsensicality could be forgiven, but it's like the last 5 minutes and you just don't care by then.

Annoying and shitty characters, lame situations, no decent gore or unsettling horror. No tits, which is a shame because the main chick has a rocking body. It's lame and shitty and not worth watching. 1.5 stars. Tubi you failed me.

Tubi actually has a ton of gems for horror movies but it's mostly 80s slashers. Pieces, the slumber party massacre, intruder, graduation day, mortuary, blood harvest there are alot more than that but those are my personal favorites and they tend to never get taken off. They also have all 3 sleepaway camps.

The thing I liked about Terrifier 1 and 2 is the fact that Art is emotive and humorous which breaks up the tedium of most slasher films where you know the premise and have to sit through 30 minutes of stalking and buildup. This can be great when well executed but I like how the Terrifier films just get to the point with this odd creepy sadistic clown interacting with people. Terrifier 2 is way too long but it plays as some long extended surreal dreamlike experience and I had fun watching it.

I think both terrifiers were pretty damn good. Personally I enjoyed all hallows eve the most even tho it's low budget trash but personally I'm bummed because it has become clear art will be a Freddy/killjoy like character where he can do things like come out of the TV or attack you in your dreams. There will be no origin lore where art was some deranged guy or became that way etc, will be more supernatural. Overall I do like the franchise though and imo it's the strongest horror/slasher franchise since scream.

I at least kind of liked how Unfriended (I did only watch the first) had that gimmick of only showing the laptop screen for a majority of the movie. It was kinda neat.

Since he was mentioned before, I checked out two movies Good Bad Flicks recommended: The Blood on Satan's Claw and Bloody Hell.

Satan's Claw has a good slow burn with being a 70s British folk horror. It doesn't go into too much detail with the supernatural aspect, which I think makes it more atmospheric and unsettling. GBF said it was best to go into Bloody Hell blind and I agree. Even though the main character completed his arc, the final moments made me want to see a continuation.

I've been revisiting some Hong Kong comedy-horror films, like the Mr. Vampire franchise, which helped kick off the 1980s craze in " jiangshi" fiction and films you saw in Hong Kong., the so-called "hopping vampires" of Chinese folklore. The first film was such a hit it spawned loosely-related sequels and even a TV series, Vampire Expert, that ran for two seasons, but was cut short when veteran martial artist/stuntman/actor Lam Ching-ying, the man who'd been the lead of most of the installments, passed away from liver cancer.

Of the sequels, I like Mr. Vampire IV almost as much as the original, though they're all nicely creative horror comedies with HK martial arts action. The only direct sequel to the first, from original director Ricky Lau, Mr. Vampire 1992 is also a romp.

Lam Ching-ying was also in another jiangshi horror comedy, starring Sammo Hung and directed by Lau, Encouters of the Spooky Kind II and 1990s Magic Cop, where Ching-ying once more played a practicing Taoist with a unibrow, only now he's an ex-cop in modern Hong Kong where a Japanese sorcereress is using black magic and zombie henchmen to run a drug ring.

Terrifier 3 came #1 this weekend!! (!) This is "holy fucking shit" tier of wtf. Gonna' show my age for a moment but you zoomers or new guys have no idea. The last time an unrated horror movie was released theatrically and did well was Maniac all the way back in 1980 where it did 10 million over the weekend but didn't come #1.

This is like if the sequel to Maniac (Manic 2: Mr. Robbie) actually came out, huge hit, and devoured the box office. Keep in mind that Terrifier 3 is on 2500-ish theaters whereas Joker 2 is on 4 thousand theaters.

This is huge. We could be on the approach of a wave of brutal independent horror on a mainstream scale.

I recently got back from a matinee of Terrifier 3 and it will likely be on a list of horror movies set during Christmas. Since a fourth installment is in the works, that could be where the series ends and female lead gets somewhat of a happy ending given what she has been through. With it not being as long as the last entry the third act doesn't feel like it drags on (I rewatched the previous movies not too long ago), but the shorten time resulted in a number of offscreen deaths including the brother, which I was a bit upset about because I was hoping this series would end with him and Sienna fighting Art together. I speculated the fourth entry would be the finale because of how much the brutality is pushed with each movie. When you have a terrorist-like bombing at a mall that has children blown apart can you really push the envelope any further?

Now with that out of the way, let me share my thoughts on some of previews I saw.

Good thing it lets you know this from the producers of A Quiet Place, which I guess makes it seem less like a ripoff?

Now I find the tagline, "From the unhinged creators of Barbarian" misleading. While Zach Cregger is a producer for Companion, he did not write and direct it while the actual writer and director had no involvement with Barbarian. The only similarity these two movies may have is the continuing to use "toxic masculinity" as the villain that arthouse horror films seem to be doing.

Franchises that make money don't end no matter what.

It will end 4 movies after the point no one involved with the first three movies is still involved and Art has changed actors at least twice. Then we get the original Terrifier re-make (but PG-13). Then a sequel to that which no one will even discuss. Then it is done.

A fate worse than any of Art's victims really.

This probably deserves broader discussion, but I wonder if theatres and the somewhat dire straits they are in can break the stranglehold the MPAA has had. I mean you've already got streaming where they don't give a shit about ratings, and now it is somewhat (granted in a niche market) proven that something unrated can have a successful theatrical run (I mean it's not the first time, what with Midnight Cowboy and a couple others I can't recall, but they leaned into their X rating rather than just not giving a shit).

Anyway, I hope so. If some stronger-willed independent film-makers/distrihutors just said fuck your edits, we'll just release it unrated. Or even better, just said we're not even submitting shit to the MPAA (which IS costly), because who cares, we still get streaming and theater money.

See what happens, I guess, but hopefully there'll be a quick, successful unrated follow-up to keep the pressure on.

yeah ngl this is actually the big question coming out of this

"unrated" was THE death mark
NC-17 and X have more respect than "unrated" from commercial movie theaters

How ironic as I also got an advertisement that the unrated cut of the first Saw film will be shown in movie theaters to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
