What are some good horror movies that don't start out as horror? For example, From dusk till dawn, The Loved Ones, The Invitation (2015), Edit: The Guest. I remember specifically showing a friend the loved ones and he didn't understand why we we're watching some coming of age movie, then it kicked in.
The Perfect Host, which is more of a psychological thriller, falls in this category. It's one that you need to go into blind since the trailer spoils one of the major twists (even if you've already figured it out based on the title).

It's a shame the horror scene is so pozzed, both the people in it and the media. Too many alt girls who nose rings and spongebob tattoos thinking they're deep for liking horror films and bringing in the reddit soylets with them. Having a movie book club for new horror releases could be a great excuse to try some modern films out with a filter. Too many gay communist couple turn out to be jesus or black man tortured by trump supporters being released so it's barely worth digging into current year horror. The best you're getting is girl boss 80's nostalgia with pop culture references in every line. But a man can dreamed of a based horror book club right?

The author is an amusing autist and weirdo. She's a local Austin horror scene chick that does a podcast and does stuff with the Drafthouse and other film labels. She tries to be edgy but is a hardcore feminist.
Oh, she's one of those Austin horror scene chicks who does stuff with film labels and has a podcast and is a feminist that I was not previously familiar with

I can't think of many horror movies that don't start out normal before the horror elements are added. Almost every slasher movie has a normal calm opening.
Usually there's some kind of prologue or foreshadowing or crazy YOU KIDS ARE DOOMED guy. I don't remember Hostel having anything like that at all until pretty far into the movie. From Dusk Till Dawn either. I think Don't Look Now might qualify.

But it isn't. That really only applies to most Blumhouse pieces of shit.
Here's two newer "horror" movies that people really love desperately, Mandy, and Skinamarink. These are both some of the most talked about horror films in recent years. Skinamarink was made by a flamboyant gay guy that says it's "Reddit's movie", and Mandy was made by a guy who says he is allergic to masculinity and toxic masculinity is the worst thing in the world and says that's what the movie is about. That's just two of the most popular horror movies that aren't Blumhouse. You can keep going on and on with these, just about every single horror movie made these days with some kind of studio backing is pozzed. Homemade SOV movies made by autists like "Toxic Retards" are our only hope.

2016 called, it wants your hot take back.

It's not even about popularity. There is so much shit horror pushing leftist ideas it's impossible to avoid. Even if you do find a good idea it's probably going to have a mystery meat genderspecial as the main character or side kick.

Yeah I was using those movies as examples because they aren't as blatant and they are really loved by pretty much all horror fans today, you could use tons more examples that are even more obvious than those movies or more recent than Mandy. I hate Skinamarink but I actually really like Mandy, I thought it would be interesting to read up about the movie and I just find a bunch of cringe gay "progressive" circle jerking from the writers and directors. This happens with almost every studio backed movie.

I loved Mandy. I also really liked the director's previous movie, Beyond the Black Rainbow. I don't keep up with Cosmatos' interviews or wherever he spouts his political opinions. Maybe he's got limp wristed politics, but so far his movies are great.

I've been meaning to watch Skinamarink, but all the hype it got made me procrastinate.

I Saw the TV Glow was shit. Some awful acting, made worse once you get people who are clearly twice the age of the characters they are playing for most the movie.

Movie really is about trooning out much like writer/director did, really nothing else in it. My take away from the movie is if you watch girl tv shows as a kid, you are really a troon.

You couldn't tell that from the main character and title?

Steam next fest is going again and there's a bunch of horror demos to try. What the car is not a horror game but it's creepy and unsettling. It's like a muppet world gone wrong.

A24? More like Gay24.

Shit joke aside, the initial trailer made it look like they stole the concept from Candle Cove, but looks to be much worst.

Puppet Master 5 is so obviously the last 30 minutes of 4 and then an hour of filler they shot in a police station.
Well if you keep going it's only getting worse.

I re-watched Phenomena for the first time in forever. It's a better movie if you go in expecting it to be unintentionally funny. You just have to forgive certain things and the good parts are great. Maybe the 4K helps too.

The sixth one is especially shit, and you only need to look at the IMDB trivia to see how lazy it is:

Most horror series are sucking after the 5th one any way. It's just a bit strange Six shooter is way more animated and the the puppeteering was even better than 4. But everything else is a step back.

Blade not stabbing the totem is weird. He keeps waving his knife at people then not going for the kill.

The protagonist is a repulsive, painfully autistic mulatto with daddy issues. His obsession with a schizoid goth lesbian leads him to fantasize about trooning out and becoming her partner-in-yuri. He remains a loser and deteriorates both mentally and physically as the movie progresses. I can appreciate the shocking level of self awareness.

The story behind part 6 (or Curse) is more interesting than the movie itself. It was supposed to be a Puppet Wars movie with the Puppets fighting various tiny creatures ala parts 4 and 5 but funding fell through and Full Moon was not in the best financial shape with Paramount cancelling their deal. But, Blockbuster still demanded another Puppet Master movie so Charles Band completely just shit out a movie and reused the Tank puppet from Puppet Wars or some other abortion.

Hard to believe that this was shot by a gay man...
