I love Hellraiser, it's a comfort movie for me.
But that scene with the arm caught on a nail STILL gets me and Im hard to skeeve out.

If they can't see the same woke bullcrap nonsense they've seen from Hollywood in Barbarian just because it throws a thin fresh coat of shiny paint in it, then you'red dealing with a moron. I hate this movie and I hate how well it tricked everyone.

Inspired by my love for The Guest (2014), I decided to give You're Next (2011) a shot the other night. I probably initially overlooked it because of its similarities to films like The Strangers (2008 ) and my confusion about which was which.

In short, I was pleasantly surprised by how subversively humorous the movie is. That's not to suggest it reinvents horror movie tropes because it doesn't, but the horrific promise of the film ("let's watch innocent people be terrorized and murdered for 90 minutes") is fairly blunted by levels of caricature that still don't destroy the drama of the film. I almost laughed out loud at the daughter's inane dialogue before she ran out of the house and... well, I'm not spoiling the plot.

It also seems sadly noteworthy now that you can have a STRONK FEMALE LEAD in a film and not have it be woke in any way. You're so happy she's so capable at that point in the movie because nobody else seems to be. I think the plot could have used some more outrageous kills, but it's quite satisfying otherwise.

And, it must be said, the film looks fantastic for a $1 million production. One of the very best uses of a severely limited budget I can think of. Fuck Blumhouse, these guys would be handling all budget American horror in a just world.

Anyway, I gotta start getting serious about searching out spooky movies for the season. I think my next will be Bad Moon (1996) thanks to the YouTube channel Good Bad Flicks.
 
This last year I had discovered and gotten super entrenched in the work of Junji Ito. If there is any horrorkiwi that knows of similar horror manga artists that are translated to English, I would be very interested in a list of favorite authors/books by them.

Also, on the Junji Ito note, I know a handful of live action Tomie films have been made over the years, I'm curious if any are good or when/if they start to get bad. This horror season I plan to peep a handful if not all of them, and will make a breakdown for the thread.

Bad Moon is a fun werewolf movie. I've always enjoyed it.

There have been a lot of strong female leads in horror movies. Horror movies were the first place I ever saw strong women, and they always seem to get over looked or ignored by "modern" audiences. I guess because most old school slasher flicks have tits in them so that cancels it out in their mind? Just look at Nancy in Nightmare on Elm street, or Kirsty in Hellraiser.

Oh, I know. And it's a tradition that makes sense on multiple levels. It's just still a little shocking when a movie made within the last 15 years isn't a woke piece of shit. It jars you back into the reality of good storytelling that modern media is trying so hard to brute force us out of.

And as for why "modern audiences" don't seem to know anything about those characters, it's because they don't need or want to. They have talking points and a narrative, and evidence to the contrary could ruin that. I'm not kidding even a little bit.

So the sacrament holds up really well. I'll say that the fact the first scene is a couple of vice reporters talking about how they believe in journalist integrity and the importance of unbiased reporting was hilarious, especially given the current happenings page.

I'll give full credit to the actor who played The Father. The movie hinged on the cult leader being believable and God damn, he nailed it.

The entire interview scene was fucking nerve wracking because you know it's going to go wrong, but you don't know how.
I also just learned that the cult leader is the fucking gas station attendant from the coin toss scene from no country for old men.

I'll say this much, the second half is a lot like open water. It's nothing but dread and misery. If you don't like brutal misery and depression, skip it. I also was mildly surprised to see this was more tasteful than anticipated for something based off of JonesTown.

I think what really makes a "strong female lead' woke is really doing the equivalent of this but playing it straight


That's why You're Next works since they don't lord over the fact that the female character can kick ass or rather she doesn't in universe and it's just natural to her. Compared this to Black Christmas (2019) that is very obnoxious about its "girl power" message that's as subtle as a burning train with dying clowns in it.

You should see it. It's has a slow build up to it, giving you time to get to know the mom and Regan. Also the supernatural stuff that happens isn't over the top really, the spinning head is one of the most unenviable things to happen, but the atmosphere is really good and the characters are engaging. You really feel for the family and priests. The old make up on Max Von Sydow is really god and still holds up today.

Blumhouse are very good at holding films to their budget. If the $28 million weekend happens, they almost have their production budget back. The legs on this film will be terrible, but it probably won't be enough of a catastrophe to shut down the next Exorcist abomination. If they get lucky, they will break even and then Exorcist: Deceiver is definitely happening.

Exorcist 2 is undoubtedly the superior Exorcist sequel and a truly astonishing film.
