A little direct-to-video obscurity I was interested in after hearing about it not long ago, from 1988, it's Psychic Vision: Jangrel, which seems like a precursor to J-horror like Ringu and Noroi: The Curse, it goes pretty hard for a found footage horror film made well before that field was oversaturated, and is about 40-something minutes.

The film allegedly consists of scenes filmed for a TV documentary program following a burgeoning young idol performer as her team get ready to release her next big hit single “Love Craft”. It comes off like a behind-the-scenes look at the idol pop star industry as it was in the 1980s, the costume discussions, the recording of the track, the video production, and so on. One little problem, "Love Craft" was composed by a woman who died seven years before and the song itself may be cursed. It culminates in a real go-for-it explosive ending. Directed by Teruyoshi Ishii and written by prolific scriptwriter Chiaka J. Konaka, who has written quite a bit of horror in various media, films, TV, animation (including the animated series Serial Experiments Lain).

I found untranslated versions on Archive.org and here's one with subtitles on Youtube (warning: naked breasts right there in the opening moments)

Now this one's so obscure even I haven't heard of it.

sounds cool
subs from some rando on reddit

Man, Barbarian was...a movie. I'm not one of those strong women who are oppressed, held back and beaten by The Patriarchy on a daily basis, so maybe I missed something. Not even the jump scares were enjoyable.

Bill Skarsgard was wasted.

I watched Scream 6.
Well, I should say I tried to watch scream 6. The fucking dialogue is extremely cringe and everyone is fucking obnoxious. Like I got to the point where "We are the core fucking four" and I turned it off.

I also am hearing that the next one is gonna be from the nigger who did happy death day, and that has instantly killed ANY of my fucking interest.

I said it somewhere else but the only things I liked about it is that it referenced Jason Takes Manhattan and Giallo films. That was it.

I got dragged into watching Scream 6 with some friends a while ago. Was never really interested in the series so this was the first and only one I've actually seen. Wasn't a fan. Found the main girl unlikable and they try way too hard to make you feel sorry for her. The "it's in the blood" trope is so fucking cringe.

I will say that the ladder scene was pretty good, but everything else sucked.

so it turned out pretty cool
you can probably guess basically everything that happens from the quick synopsis, but it's pretty well executed (especially for the low budget direct to video nature), leans very well into the "behind-the-scenes of idol shit"aesthetic
subs are a little wonky, they omit a lot of secondary dialog but the most important stuff is there or is pretty clear what's up

I recently saw two films, both pagan horror movies which were The Borderlands (2013) and The Ritual (2017).

Both were really good films, and I'd recommend them. Though between the two, The Borderlands is a better movie since there was more interesting stuff that went on with it, and is definitely one of the best found footage films.

I still never watched Scream 6 and I never will. And I'm even more pissed to find out a literal niggerfaggot behind Happy Death Day is helming the seventh movie. God help us all
HDD and HDD2 were great fucking movies

What next, you didn’t like Detention, you nigger?

Detention is actually a great fucking litmus test whether you should talk to people about horror movies with them or not. Resolution is another.

Ok they weren’t “great” movies as in they were fucking citizen Kane, they were great movies because they are entertaining

As I’ve said before:
Biden inflation, nigga.

Yeah, if you compare it to the greatest movies of all time it's definitely not all the way there, and sure, I'll admit that when I get drunk I tend to overrate stuff I just watched, but as far as current year + 8 horror goes, it's definitely a 9+. You have to keep in mind that there are basically four scales as far as review goes:

Classic Movies
Classic Horror Movies
Regular Movies
Regular Horror Movies

A regular horror movie might deserve a 8 out of 10 on that scale, but compared to actual movies, it might deserve a 6 to 7, and compared to classic horror, it's downright a 5-6 at most.

Compared to the shit that has been coming out in the last year or so, The Menu is definitely worth a 9-9.5/10. It's certainly better than fucking Barbarian's back half. As a regular movie, yeah I agree it's probably a solid 8 or a weak 8.5/10 at best. Next to fucking classics like Dead Alive? At best it's a 7/10 in comparison. Maybe 6.5/10 even. And if you compare Dead Alive to all times best like Casablanca, North by Northwest, Rashomon or Freddy Got Fingered, then yeah even Dead Alive only deserves a 6.5/10 at most in comparison.

Whenever I review shit on here, it's always scaled in the lowest category. Classic Horror Movies nowadays are few and far in between, and The Menu sure as shit ain't one of them. It's definitely worth a watch, though, and definitely better than anything else I've seen that has come out in the last 6 maybe 12 months.

I think the only other movie that even came close to The Menu as far as quality goes was Watcher and it managed to completely shit the bed in the last minute that I now hate it. It would have ranked higher than The Menu and I could have seen it become a classic if they hadn't fucked up so bad. Other than that, it's really been a shit year for horror. What else came close in comparison to deserving a 9/10?

Bodies Bodies Bodie? Fucking Pearl? M3GAN? Deadstream was good, but not 9/10 maybe 8.5/10. Sure as shit wasn't the Hellraiser or TMC reboots. Smile was much better than it should have been, but still a 7.5-8/10 as far as regular horror goes and that's it. Men? lmao.

I think we'll all agree the only truly 10/10 deserving movie was Halloween Ends.
As a regular horror movie, HDD and HDD2 are great. 8/10. Maybe 9/10.

Doesn’t mean they are classic, but they are fun, entertaining, gory, nice t&a and a fun time to watch while drunk

if youd rather jerkoff eyetalian pretentious schlock from the 1970s with retraded dialogue, go ahead. I’ll take this shit over it any day.

Got around to watching the Pit and the Pendulum from 1961, I loved it. Pure gothic horror. Dusty sets covered in cobwebs, orchestral score, really really overused thunder sound effects. Vincent Price. And the color is beautiful.

I wanna know, why can't horror movies look like this anymore? What happened to all the amazing sets and color? All these shitty slasher and ghost movies nowadays are the most visually boring things on the market. I know things like matte paintings and practical effects have fallen out of fashion nowadays, but is it too much to ask to have a mainstream horror movie that isn't grey or fucking sepia?

After the pleasant surprise that was Demons I watched the sequel, but unfortunately it was a case of diminishing returns. On the plus side, the makeup is good and the savage nature of the creatures is unsettling (silhouetted figures with glowing eyes will always be creepy to me.) The problem is that it's the exact same as the first film, just set in a different location and even more nonsensical. The idea of a cursed film or mask from the original is at least believable, but here it's a movie on tv that only possesses one person. They also reuse the punks in a car subplot, but whilst in the first they were a plot device to let the infection spread outside, here they just crash into someone and are never heard from again. Or the end demon suddenly being blind for...reasons? So whilst entertaining, still a bit of a disappointment
